A band dad passed away about a month ago. He fell off a ladder when he was helping cut tree branches.
Both of his kids are in band, and it was just really sad. All like 70 or so of us went to the wake, and about 50 of us skipped school to go to the funeral. We're wearing black ribbons on our uniforms this year.
But yeah, it's just really awkward because his son (a tuba and bass drum player), copes with it by joking about it. Like, we're like, what's up and he says "My dad." Keeps a straight face, and it's like, God; don't say that! When we say that he just laughs and replies with, "That's what he woulda said!"

^That sounds like something that happened in my band last year. Almost exactly a year ago the mother of two of our band kids passed away. One was a senior and the other was a junior. The band played at her funeral. It was soooo sad. Her daughters are coping with it well. The older one just graduated and is in college now. The other is in my grade, and for an English assignment this year we had to choose a picture and write about it, so she chose a picture of her and her mom. I wanted to read her essay but I knew I would start crying, so I didn't.

update: girl with the wasp sting is out of the hospital and seemed ok when i saw her last night at the homecoming dance.
anyway, last year, one of the alto sax players in my grade lost his dad in a snowmobile accident. it was terrible because a lot of the kids in band knew his dad, who was a huge supporter of the band program in general. it was after marching season though, so we didn't wear ribbons or anything.

We have had some awful luck with injuries lately. One girl threw a triple with her rifle and it landed on her toe, breaking it, and then another girl threw a triple and it landed on the girl next to her's shoulder during our last competition performance. One boy got the break drum thrown on his foot, and then the same one got hit in the eye by our tuba. XD

We've had one guy with a concussion from football...that was always interesting. Another one threw out his back clean lifting, and the concussion man did the same thing. We also had someone sleep on his back funny or something and have it get screwed to the point that he looked like he had scoliosis...and then be fine a week later. And one sprained ankle. And our official "cripple" is the kid who got a chipped bone playing soccer. Everyone's healthy now, except for him.

He wasn't in band, but last year when I was in eighth grade a freshman drowned in a river. He had lost his shoe and was trying to get it back, and the current caught him, dragged him under, and he drowned. A lot of my friends in the band knew him, and we were all crying. It was so sad. =(

We have a lot of deaths at my school. A few attempted rapes of students not in band, and a succesfull one of another student not in band. (That one made headlines because it was all high school kids who all were drunk.) No deaths in the band and no serious injuries. On a lighter note, one of my friends in a rival band who is a Horn player was messing around with the color gaurd rifles. He threw one up. It came down and hit him in the eye. I guess from what my other friends told me he had a pretty major and cut up black eye for a couple of weeks. That kid just makes me laugh, really smart except for a few rare dumb choices.

Before my time we had a french horn player who died. There is now a scholarship dedicated in his memory. There is always injuries. Two years ago I hurt my knee during and I did not march again until that same year at nationals. There has been broken leg, twisted ankle, stupid accidents.(Our band is pretty crazy and out going)

We had a band member's mother die about a year and 3 months ago. It's really sad because the kid is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

A few days ago, Dr. Dicicco, who pretty much founded IUP's music department, passed away. I didnt get to go to the funeral, but it had the IUP Wind Ensemble playing our arrangment of Amazing Grace and everyone I talked to said it was pretty emotional.

Today, a kid in my band died. Everyone was super depressed. It was really unexpected; I don't know how to deal with it at all. He was such a great guy too.
