I know I did a thread last year about the boy in my band that died. The one year date is coming up this month, so I was just wondering.

When I was in HS, we had a french horn player commit suicide, and a girl that had just quit band die in an auto accident. About 5 years after we graduated, one of the band director's sons (who also played trumpet) died in a kayaking accident. In my college band, we had a percussionist die of a very rare heart disorder while he was sprinting during football tryouts. He had quit band and was attempting to walk onto the football team. We also had a trumpet player seriously, seriously injured in a car accident. He was in a coma for a few months. He had a very serious head injury, but he recovered through a lot of hard work in physical therapy. He comes back to alumni band from time to time!

This isn't something that I really have any experience with, in or outside of band. So far as I know, nothing of the sort has ever occured with our band. Certainly not while I've been around.

This year we've had multiple tragidies at our school, 2 deaths and one near death, life altering accident. However none of them have been band students. I know in the last 7 years nothing like that has happened within band at my school.

In the band, no, but there have been three student deaths in the three years my school has been open.

A girl who would have been a freshman in guard died in a 4-wheeler accident before band camp. She would have graduated this year. There's a scholarship in memory of her that her parents give to a graduating senior that's pursuing music in college.

A boy who was in my grade was in a 4- wheeler accident before camp. He would've been a freshman this coming year. We have a low-brass award dedicated to him now.

Well, none of my corps-mates have died, but the drumline captain collapsed during a football game, and later she found out she had a condition that wouldn't allow her to ever march again.

We've had a couple of people twist ankles and stuff like that. For a while, I thought that would be the most serious problem our band would have.
That changed last year. There's this girl in my grade and she has MS, which is Multiple Sclerosis. It affects the central nervous system. She's confined to a wheelchair. I know this sounds morbid, but she's basically waiting to die. It's really sad. She's still all smiles. She never looks upset. I'm kinda glad she doesn't have a motorized wheelchair anymore, because she used to run over people in the hallway with that thing!
It really is sad though. She can't really do anything. She has to have someone with her basically 24/7 to help her with everything.

My school has a "tradition" of loosing someone every year, typically a senior in a motor accident (there have been "theories" that a "curse" is on my school during the reign of our old athletic director.) My freshmen year a girl in my class, an alto sax, committed suicide. On Friday, may 13th (my classmates now especially hate Friday the 13ths.) This year marked the three year anniversary. The thing is since then we haven't lost anyone, though two chorus girls were in a serious car accident the other week... but that's another story.

^I think there has been at least one death per year at my school for... I don't know how long. I've never known the person though. Again, it's generally a car accident.

We had a band alumnus die in a car accident about a month ago. His sister was also in the band and just graduated this year. These kinds of things are terribly tragic.

We recently had a drummer get in an accident. His car flipped 3 times. The passenger died, and our drummer was alright. And, A girl last year, popped her arm out of socket, while tossing a flag.
