So, ive always wanted to know.. How does playing a certain instrument affect your personality? Cause ive ALWAYS wondered why most people [in my band, at least] think people who play the trumpet are idiots/arrogant/jerks, flutes are boy crazed preps, low brass people are plain weird and other stupid stereotypes.. It just doesnt make sense to me. or..is it true?? I certainly do NOT wanna be an idiotic, arrogant jerk..

I like band stereotypes. It makes me horny and sexy (I play the horn by the way) At least that's a stereotype at our school.

Band stereotypes, like all other stereotypes, wouldn't exist if there weren't some truth to them. That's not to say, however, that they are all-encompassing and without exceptions.
It does stand to reason, though, that the most outgoing, confident people would be attracted to the trumpet, being the most often featured and easiest to pick out of a band.
Meanwhile, the flute attracts those who are more comfortable hiding behind numbers, yet still like to have fun and entertaining parts.
Aside from certain instruments attracting certain types of people, it is also often a trend that a person adopts the stereotype that goes with their instrument, even if they didn't fit it before.
So there is some truth to them, but like I said, that's not to say they're unavoidable or that since you play trumpet you have to be an arrogant jerk.

As I've stated numerous times before (I'm really not trying to brag), we have the all-state first chair trumpet and he is the most humble Mormon boy you could ask for...sets up the chairs for his section every morning and all that. The low brass are plain weird in my band, and our first chair we call Bacus (his name is Lucas) after the Greek god of drunkeness and debauchery, of whom he is probably an incarnation.
I agree with trumellotonium that it's the characteristics of the instruments. The guys who like to sit in the background and have their own thing are usually the ones who drink heavily, hence the tuba-player stereotype. The people who have the same tuba idea but also want to be more involved with the band and solo occasionally play euphonium, and the people who like to be loud and proud go for trombone. Honestly, IDK what attracts people to the French horn, other than a challenge.

Drums - people who like to be obnoxious =) People that are hyper a lot, or need something to take energy out on. (both true in my band, in a loving way haha)
Most of the brass sections are the perverted ones at my school. They corrupt everyone. lol. even the poor innocent freshman. hahaha.
The flutes and most of the clarinets are mild, very well mannered. (notice i said most haha) But the saxes...they do their own thing. I guess they are the ones with the "trumpet" attitude. The jerks, overflowing with arrogance sometimes. Gotta love em though =D

(both true in my band, in a loving way haha) That's EXACTLY like our percussion section. They're all CRAZY (except for the 2 girls, they're normal). Besides that, stereotypes don't really apply to my band. There are lots of different types of people in every section.

The french horn... hmm. It got be because I was a trumpet player looking for a challenge. It's always got the most dramatic parts (except marches, grr), so maybe it's the most dramatic (but not guard style drama, more like extreme sports style drama?) people? I don't know.

Gotta love em though =D [arg. i hate triple/double posts or w/e] ok yeah...brass does corrupt freshmen. theyve corrupted me, but at least were all a family now and in my opinion its better to joke around and have a good mood than be so f-ing disciplined you become a hard-a**.. of course know when to stop goofing around, lol. i like the clarinets though. theyre mostly optimists in my band. and well in my section, you have to be 'cool" to be in my section, lol and we're just fun loving slightly perverted people who text too much, have a lame sense of humor and maybe habitually slack off. but its not our fault.. and, during marching season, i would get mad at someone or just joke around, and these kids in my section would be like, dont give me that attitide! of course i wouldnt have that attitude or anything, i was only joking and i would be like the nicest person ever but i guess , "dont give me that attitude" is what you get for being a trumpet..lol yeah im kinda staring to believe in the stereotypes now. if there werent certain types of people, the similar kinds of people wouldnt stick/flock/be in a certain section or whatever. Yeah, i get what yall are trying to say.

Brass definitely corrupts you. It's just that some of us are better at hiding it than others. But I've also met extremely corrupted woodwinds and percussionists. I don't think any whole section in my band is stereotypical. Some sections have the stereotypical people in them, but the whole section doesn't act the same way.

Yeah i guess we're too...lazy to hide it lol. No, jk. As i said we're just fun-loving. in my band we just dont have woods./perc. that show it, as you say. and my section id pretty large so there def are different people..just we kinda share common things , you know.

I know what you mean. My section has the stereotype of not working. But we do work! We just have to spend most of the sectional time looking for the best spot, such as in a tree or on the swingset.
