I'm the owner of a Xaphoon. That's rare enough for me.

I just started playing contrabass clarinet and I'm pretty sure there aren't loads of us.

^ No, but it's fun, and if you have a Bb, you can make all your friends run/ cause seismic disturbances by playing the low Eb...

Apparently my band has an Eb clarinet. It's tiny and a bit annoying. One of the juniors plays it during pep band.

when i was a sophomore one of the junior baritone players had his horn in the shop so he had to play a trombatone (valved trombone). those are pretty rare, i think

Eb clarinet. It's tiny and a bit annoying. Only a bit? I am amazed she plays it for pep band though. Harmony instrument parts (Eb clarinet, alto clarinet, Eb trumpet, contrabass clarinet, bass trombone, soprano sax, etc) have been all but written out of marching/ pep literature as of late.

It's actually a he =] We have old pep band music. I don't think we have had new music in ages. So there might be parts for it in our music. He also plays the contra bass in pep band as well. I think he plays off a different part.

Well contrabass you can play bari sax or do the tuba trick but there's no corresponding part for Eb clarinet.

Yeah... unless there is a picc player playing the melody up an octave the alto line up an octave sounds kinda odd. Might want to work on that, maybe get with the BD to write an Eb part. Use picc music and 1st clarinet.

Flugelhorn I think.
I imagine you could put a first trombone part in front of an Eb clarinetist and they would have a go of it, since those parts are usually written on several ledger lines. Is Eb clarinet music usually written in C or transposed the way a trumpet or bari sax is?

Eb clarinet music is written in Eb. However, the easiest way to handle the transposition is to write the part in bass clef and then add 3 sharps or subtract 3 flats. It sounds a M3 higher than the written note if I remember right. Again, blend the picc, 1st clari, and 1st trumpet parts to get the most effective Eb part. Your BD will be best for deciding the most appropriate way to do this.
