My comp teacher last year had a bass cello...it sounded like a bass guitar, and was one of like ten or something.

lol. i played the flugel before when my mellophone went all freaky. im not too sure how to spell it, though, flugel, flugle, i've seen it called a flugelhorn before. lol.
i looked it up. a flugelhorn resembles a trumpet with a wider bell (i already knew that. haha.)

English horn, Eb clarinet, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano sax, mellophone, bass trombone, and flugelhorn really aren't all the weird. I see them a lot actually. Now, someone show me a bass flute, and I'll be happy.

Are you happy? Even I, the brass supremacist to end all brass supremacists, think that bass flutes are badass.

I think a flute obsessed person would know what one looks like. And my band director is getting one, and an alto flute, and is putting together a flute ensemble. I'm going to play bass flute. Already called it.

You said to show you one, so I did. It was an olive branch, which you rejected.

we have an alto flute. For a reed endo-embouchure woodwind like me, it's a lot easier to play than a picc or even a standard flute. However, I did manage to get a sound out of my sister's doll flute- about 1/2 the size of a picc, could fit in the palm of your hand- the other day. The only problem is, it's keys aren't motile.

when I was at Interlochen, our flute section got to go to the instrument collection there, and believe me, there were quite a few "rare" instruments there. I have pictures, too, which I may put up sometime, but the list of what was there includes things like ophicleides, double-belled euphoniums, the original sousaphone, and a saxophone made by Adolph Sax himself! It was probably the coolest collection of instruments I've ever seen in my life.

^ Wow, that sounds like fun! Was it a marching sax (eb/Bb) or orchestral (f/c)??

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has a very nice instrument collection as well.
There's an excellent video on youtube of three great bass trombonists (one is Doug Yeo; I can't remember the others) jamming on ophecleide. It makes me wish the instrument had never gone out of style.

We have a contrabass flute.. a bunch of us discovered it in a locker freshman year. OH- and one of our directors brought up a contrabass saxophone.
