Our director pulled out his slide trumpet. I got to play it with my gf's mouthpiece.
It was... strange. But it would OWN in Jazz Band.

Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They have an entire exhibit displaying ethnic and unusual modern instruments. I was in band geek heaven when I went this fall. =D

went to a church thing last night and saw an english brass band perform. lots of rare instruments including cornets (b flat and e flat), flugelhorn, e flat alto horn (looks like a baby euphonium), bass trombone (ok not so rare, but i thought i'd mention it), e flat tuba, bb flat tuba. other instruments were baritone, euphonium, trombone, and various percussion.
btw,are you brass players drooling yet? ;D

I got to play a slide trumpet over Thanksgiving break at my old high school, so amazingly awkward and yet so amazingly awesome. And they also found this old Eb Alto Horn that all the students have nicknamed "The Destroyer". The director wants to either destroy it or submit it to the Smithsonian. And I got to play an over the shoulder baritone in our concert on Friday, we were playing an old Sousa piece called "Sheridan's Ride" that depicts a Civil War battle, and we were using period bugles for taps/charge/etc. So our director decided, since we're doing period stuff anyway, let's bring out the over the shoulder horns and play some civil war music (dixie, when johnny comes marching home, etc.)! It was lots of fun, just weird since the bell is on your left shoulder pointing BEHIND you, here's a good pic to explain... home.att.net/~bobbeecher/bari-euph/images/OTSfamily.jpG

Well the band would have marched at the front of the regiment, and you'd want a back-facing bell so that the rest of the group would hear and stay in step.

Dunno if it's to be considered unusual, but our marching band doesn't march trombones - we only march baritones. So this year we had thirty-two of them, counting myself

Umm, no idea if this is that odd, but it was odd 2 me, in summer band we had a kid who played the bass flute (I think that's the name...) anyways, it was very odd looking, one of the trumpets asked if the kid (it was also a boy!) had sat on his flute.
