I looked at this thread and thought "what?"
There really isn't much to being sophomores, which is why I'm looking forward to this year--no longer freshman, but no upperclassmen responsibilities.
Is anyone their section leader? In our band this year, we had 2, next year we'll have 1. I guess that's what comes of being a primarily underclassmen band (scheduling steals our upperclassmen). I'm also going to be the quartermaster, which is an admin position not a leadership one, but still kind of important.
I'm assuming you're a higher chair, ac, since you're one of, what, two altoclarinets in your school?

Yay for sophomores! We have a whole lot of Sophomore SL's. I would've been the clarinet one, but I switched to pit. So its going to a different sophomore. Lol. We've had freshmen ones too, and I think one eighth grader, but she had other people helping her.

How young of people do you march?
In a normal 4-year marching setting, the only time that a freshman section leader is appropriate, I think, is when A) it's a section full of freshmen or B) there's somebody else, like from a higher band or another section, who can supervise. Last year, we had a combine flute/clarinet section because our two flutes were freshmen. Now we have a flute section of five with a now-junior as a leader, although there is a now-sophomore who is a better flautist (don't know if she's a better leader).
In my section, the low brass, we have the tuba, the two baritones and the two trombones, all of whom are now sophomores, and the first trombone is section leader, with the other one as squad leader (which doesn't mean much). We actually had an eighth grader marching my eighth grade year, and she was essentially squad leader this year (their "sl" was the dm so the squad leader was sl and so Rae took over as squad). She's really spastic, so it should be interesting to watch.

Woot! Go us! We are going to have a trombone sophomore section leader, and possibly trumpet. And oboe and baritone, because there's only one.

We march 7th grade through 12th. But Jr. High kids have to get invited based on their playing skills and maturity, and then try out. Our band is so small that it's fairly common to have young section leaders. In the case of the 8th grade SL, it was in the pit, and there was a senior who was a guitar player. But it was his first and only year in band, and it was her second, plus she had done Indoor for two years. She was pretty much the best mallet player anyways...and there wasn't really a choice. So it was her and the senior, working together.

Fair enough. We could use some junior high kids in my band.

We put in junior high kids sometimes. It's only if they're good enough. Or, if we really need someone on that instrument. I wish I could've done that. We also take players from another high school that doesn't have a marching band. It works out pretty well.

And I play Bb clarinet for the most part- I won't be able to do alto full time until next year. I just do region tryouts and s&E (and one fortunate little concerto thingy) right now. I am not a section leader per se, but I do have a few leadership posts- school owned instrument manager and possibly assistant librarian (results pennnnding...) ^We live in a wold of 5-a schools (they don't open a new one unless it will turn 5-a within 3 yrs. based on projected growth) and highly competitive bands, so we don't march jr.high kids. Band doesn't even start until 6th grade (as opposed to 4th or 5th in some places).

Yippee! Class of '11! I read so much about how awesome everyone's band dept. in their school is, and I am yet again reminded of how much ours sucks. I can't wait for college. I have a lot to learn about marching though seeing as our band doesn't exactly teach marching band like most schools do. It's not "down to business" I guess you'd say. We don't do competitions or shows or camp or whatever else most normal schools do. I don't even know what normal is. I've even considered switching schools just for band, but I could never leave my school, even if it is a piece of crap. Hmmm...um, what exactly do we talk about on this thread anyways? Random things? Just curious. I just don't want to post something that should go in a different spot.

I guess we talk about sophomority, which really isn't all that. It's sort of like being a freshman, except without the whole "on the bottom" part. You really can't do anything leadership-wise but you also know what's going on so you aren't the lowest of the low. Or so I'm told--I have yet to experience it My band are tiny, but we march only high schoolers--I should suggest we march junior high kids to my BD sometime. We live in the land of really isolated little towns so there isn't much consolidation to our high school--we have 3 leagues of schools right on top of each other, each one of a different size, and even more if you count New Mexico districts. Kind of sucks, but it makes exhibition play kind of fun (ie our varsity will play the JV team from the "big town" to the west of us, and our JV will play their freshmen, or we will play our JV against the varsity of a littler town way to the west). We also have mountain passes, so one of the 2-A schools in the league near us is actually three hours from the nearest member of its league . Do you have problems with overcrowded schools, AC?

No. Anytime there's an overcrowding issue the district just opens ore schools- out of our 6 high schools 3 of them have been opened since 2000, 2 since I started junior high, and 4 have been opened since my parents were married (1988), with the 2nd one opening in 1981. But my high school was opened in 1898 (It's changed buildings a few times since then.) Our area has experienced rapid growth over the past few years- real estate is cheap and my town is where everyone in the area wants to live... We're supposed to add 2 more high schools, 5 more junior highs and some 20-odd more elementaries before I graduate college. (4- year, not grad school and all that stuff) Ooh... I suppose I ought to add my leadership post to my sig...

I just get dragged by my parents everywhere, I see a construction site, and I'm like, "Aw, geez, another new school? And the ironic thing about that is that most families are moving here for their kids 'cause they heard that KISD is amazing and all that junk. Well, if we have that many schools, we're going to have to get a lot more teachers. From what I hear, there aren't many people going into teaching nowadays, so they have to get teachers who can't teach a rock. It's saddening. Completely off-topic, but altoclarinets, I just realized something funny about our shows. Yours is Nightmare, and your guard is wearing bat wings (if I remember your other post correctly). Ours is Swan Lake, so it's very likely that our guard is wearing white feathers or something. It's like the light side and the dark side. ;D

Hahaha Yes... And our guard had a large (30+, which is big for us) number of peeps try out this year, so they will hopefully be able to take the very best so that the guard will rock... We only have like 15 spots for guard in the show. I'm excited about it... I already have a LOT of the 3rd movement memorized. I wish Cinco was going to be home so that they could watch us... It's gonna be good.
