Back on topic.... Wow, this board has really opened my eyes to different viewpoints! Still, I think it should be counted as BETTER than a sport, but not LESS than a sport. I think anything athletic that you compete in can be a sport--gymnastics, cheerleading, skiing, and marching band. That's basically it. :-D

I'm thinking the whole point in this isn't whether or not it in itself is actually a sport. After all, like shakespeare's rose, regardless of if you call it a sport or not, the essence of marching band is the same. March, play music, make mistakes, fix them, do it right, do it right again, and again. I think the reason we care if it's called a sport or not is for recognition and credit. After all, how many of your schools care alot more about football? or even soccer, baseball, laccrosse et cetera. Half(at least) the school turns out for football games regularly, but we don't even fill the theater for our three concerts a year. Even for the more local marching competitions only band parents and siblings(and not very many of those) turn out, compared to the half-full(not counting pep-band) stands at away football games. If calling marching band a sport in your circumstances and situation will have some positive impact on what happens, e.g. funding, respect, recognition for acheivement, and all the other things that come along with being regarded as a sport instead of an "art", then by all means, call it a sport. At my school, we don't need to call it a sport, because we (usually) get recognition anyway(our principal is really supportive, which is weird, since he once was a football coach...) and we get our successes on the morning announcements, and such things as that. It may not be like that for y'all; if it helps, then marching band can be a sport. But really... whether or not it's a sport doesn't change whether or not I love it and want to participate in it, and I hope it doesn't for you.

You beat me. there was no competition, but you saw deeper then i did. In my experinces Foot ball coaches are the most appreciative of the band playing for them.

I only wish we got half the respect from the faculty as the football team does. No offence to them, but they really suck. If anything, the people come not to watch the football game, but for the halftimes shows. You should see the stands when halftime comes!
Not to mention we bring a lot more respect (and some hate =( ) back to our school every Monday during competition season then all the sports teams combined. We earn more trophies in one marching season then they have collectively over 5 years! Yet we still get little funding, little recognition, and little respect from our faculty. It really steams me!
Heck, I can remember when we were practicing our parade marching for the trip a few months ago on the track. The football players actually came out and blocked our path!! The football coach even came out a yelled at our DM simply because we were on "their" field! Pshh...I'd rather it not be called a sport. Band jocks....lmfao.

my band wasnt ignored. When we had a really cool principal. Great man, sadly he retired.
My school is new, and my old director was there when it opened so he picked all the band instruments. He double ordered most everything. 2 bassoons. 4 tubas. 2 concert tubas, 4 baritones (I think) 4 french horns, 2 mellophones (maybe 4 cant remember) 4 trombones, 1 clairinet, 1 flute, and 1 piccolo. Plus drums @_@ including a beutiful set of tymponies. he did that so when he went to the principal for approval and got denied he could cut the lessor models, and look like he really cut the program.
Our (old......my district has a real problom with principals and band directors)principal didnt bother looking he just signed. For the first 3 years the Band had unlimited travel funds. And they were used. my freshmen year we got 6000 dollars limit.i think it was 5000 my sophmore year. Anyways then we got our new director and he didnt share how much we got....if we got any (we got a new principal that year too.....who supposedlly supported the band program)
You see some of the faculty who believe that if you arnt in class every day every minute you are a failure. (proving them wrong is so fun ^_^) and band did trips and things on school days sometimes. This made them angry, becuse they are stupid. So the band only has respect from the faculty right now becuse our program is busted into 80 million pieces. (i have quips with the old director for how he handled his leaving, and i have them with the director who just left...
There is no real caste at my old school so bandos dont lose social points for being such

We're starting to get off-topic. You all are welcome to start a new thread about your school's appreciation of band.
