I wrote a LONG response to this on the last board...I'll rewrite it if I have to, but for now, I'll summarize.
No.
Now let the hating begin...

I don't think so. I can see it maybe in drum corps, but not really in high school and college band. The music still remains the most important thing, and while physical motion is involved, generally I don't think it's as intense, and you don't really physically interact with other "players". Sure you have to "train" but training in the form of push-ups, running, etc. isn't the sport itself except for track. If that made any sense...

I have to say yes, just because it's physical and at my school you can letter in band, and they don't give letters to chess or drama. That's putting it straight forward and not writing a whole book like I'm tempted to do.

I think it is a sport, because even football players that are in band complain during band camp. 'nuff said. I actually wanted to wear my Michigan Marching Band shirt for favorite sports team spirit day, but I figured they wouldn't count it as a sport, so I wore Red Wings just in case.

Yes, it is in my opinion...at my school anyways. Like brassqueen said, you can letter in band. At are school, you have to have 2 PE and 2 Fine Arts credits to graduate. You cna get your PE credits if you stay in band throughout HS. Our drum majors and squad leaders take advantage of that had have been known to make people run for being late, etc. For example, one boy had to run around the practice field (well, parking lot) 2wice with his horn above his head (mellophone). We are very involved in our marching band and movements are important. AT my school, ti's a sport.

Its more of a sport than golf...
I think that it is an athletic activity that you can compete in, how else would you define sport?

no it's not a sport. if you think that just because you do physical activity in it that it's a sport, your wrong. you do phyical activity in almost anything. you do in poker. you have to move your arm to put a card down or to go get one. that's physical activity. it's not much but it is.

The dictionary says
I think that describes marching band. We do it for fun, it takes much physical exersion, and it is planned, structured, and often competative.

I say yes. If golf or pool is a sport, then why isn't marching band? The physical components in a HS marching band aren't as "severe" as they are in DCI or something, but, you still have to be in shape, there are competitions, there are awards for doing great. I'll post more on this later. But my answer is yes.

mmm... i really don't know. it's a substitiute for p.e. and we get varsity letters for it, but then you can get letters for yearbook and it's not a sport. i guess it depends on your perspective. i call it a sport, but that's just me.

I believe it all just has to deal with the way you look at it. It's really quite an opinion to me. Sport doesn't necessarily mean something that works you to death or something extremely athletic.
I think in my opinion, marching band is a sport.
