It takes strength (mentally and physically), agility, and is extremly competitive (in high school and drum corps and if you go to a black college). Your friggin' right it's a sport

All I want to say is if cheerleading is viewed as a sport then marching band should be as well.

did dcbandnerd91 and euphzilla even read the other posts that clearly proved the fact that marching band is not a sport. go back through the pages and actually read what has been discused and tell me that you have an arguement for it.

drum corps, yes, high school band, no. I don't know much about college band yet. It all depends on your band and individual effort. If your band kicks butt and works all the time, all through the summer and after school every day, yeah, I think it could be considered a sport. However, if your band just has early practice in the fall and two weeks of summer band camp, no way. I've been in band for seven years, and while some days it can be pretty physical, most of the time setting drill isn't that exciting.
Besides, if you love band and love music, it shouldn't matter what it is considered. Since when did band kids give a crap about what all the "jocks" or whatever thought? I know I don't. I don't think this is a topic people should get worked up about. Band people understand the work that goes into band, and I'm not about to lose my breath on trying to validate what I love to someone who thinks they are better than I am, or that their activity is more important than mine.

Here's a perspective...you go to football--GAMES--and then you see the marching band at half time for entertainment. I don't think Marching Band is a sport even though I work harder than the football team at our shcool does. Marching Band requires more mental work than physical work. Your still doing a ton of physical work, but I think because their is more mental work involved, it's an extracurricular activity...not a sport. Though, just because it's an activity it doesn't mean you can't have fun with it. We are probably the most active, I don't give a hoot about what you think about me type of people, and that's the way we should intend to keep it.

I think that band is a sport and I have a lot of reasons to back it up. (I've gotten into many a debate about this with my friend).
1. We have to have physicals, just like ever other sports team 2. We are eligible for Scholar Athlete, again...like ever other sports team 3. We must attend a drug/alcohol meeting to do band 4. We do summer "training" and such 5. You have to have a certain GPA to do band, just like with other sports 6. We compete, just like other teams do.
I had about ten things, but I forgot a bunch...

some of those vary by the school. Here, the band doesn't have to attend drug/alcohol meetings... but neither do sports teams.

Since they consider golf to be a sport, marching band HAS to be. Plus, at my high school, you can letter in marching band same as any other sport.

Yes, Marching band is a sport. Like in all sports, you must practice practice practice! If you don't practice, your performance/game is not going to go well at all! You might hurt something! All sports have equipment, band is no exception. Also, not only is their MARCHING involved, (which IS exercise!) but the muscles in our face are working just as hard as the muscles in the other places of our bodies that athletes use! And all this is just the beginning! MARCHING BAND IS A SPORT.

Marching Band is too a sport. we put in as much time (if not more then) anybody else that is in athletics. I don't care what people say, it takes practice, it takes dedication, and it takes all the energy in yourself as a person to make the mb experince worth while.
Analogy; if a football player doesn't practice their kick for the field goal, then they r called to kick, naturally they will suck. If a musician doesn't practice, then the musician won't be good at all. as a matter of fact, theywould be booed by critics. Just like the football palyer.
And, I don't care what people say, MARCHING BAND IS TOO A SPORT!

Yes, in our school you can get a letter, and you have to pay a sport fee, so it is a sport.

to the people that say it's not a sport thanks for agreeing with me. prongs4band you don't have to be in shape to be in band. i have seen some really fat band people before. they are good marchers but they are deffently not in shape. "In shape" doesn't neccesarily mean that you have a lean physique or a body like Brad Pitt. It means that you can withstand physical activity to a certain degree. Look at football players. A few of those guys are huge fat (not muscle) wise and they can still play the sport and go through the games. In my band there are some really big guys that march and can withstand it better than a regular sized person in band. I think that you have to have a tolerance for some strenuous physical activity if you want to march. This is just my opinion, by the way. Guess What i am a heavy person. i march just like everyone else. I have a medical problem that causes me to be over wieght. What about the 300 pound football players that are heavy and not all muscle does that mean that they are not atheletes and that they should'nt be able to play and count it as a sport
