I have to say no. For me, the definition of a sport is a competitive activity that is governed by a strict set of rules. And included in those rules is a way to say, indefinitely, that one person won over another, and is unbiased.
For marching band, the scores are all based on personal opinion, and thus it is not a sport. (For the other side, you know when a soccer ball goes into a net, it's a point. Nothing to argue about.)
Yes, it is very physical and yes, it deserves more recognition. But I don't believe it's qualified to be a sport. It's a physical activity.

^That is exactly what I have said, almost word for word, to a lot of people. And none of them have been able to rebut it.

Artist from the neck up, athlete from the waist down. Or so says T-Dawg (head BD).

We had a biiiiiiiiased ref at our 4th playoff game who almost lost it for us, he gave us 5 holding penalties (10 yds apc) within 2 minutes and then assigned none to the other team, even after they executed some shining examples of late hitting and throwing the ball away.

Not a sport.I would almost hate to see it thought as such because it might become popular. I find that band is popular at our middle school so when they come up to high school they dont know how to handle it, they might have to let they're friends see them sans two inches ofs make-up or wear knee-high socks with shorts---oh no!! With band being an athletic a athletic art it isnt popular terfor we usually get people who are in it for the music or a sence of commraderie(curse my good vocabulary meeting my abissmal spelling skills)

Oh wow... never thought of it that way, but that's a really good point. If I hadn't already been converted to the not a sport side, that would've convinced me. ^

Hmm... well, we've had volunteers play small games against some of the football team in the past, and win

I agree on the popularity thing, and I also think that isn't the only reason that being a sport isn't advantageous. Having to go in at the sight of lightning, having restrictions on when we can rehearse, being under the athletic department, the whole no-contact-over-the-summer thing, not being able to rehearse during school, that stuff, would suck for a band to deal with.

We are under fine arts, but we still have to go in if it's lightning. And we have a state- mandate restriction on the amount of time we can practice per week.

We decide when we do and don't need to go inside due to weather.
And yeah, people from the band (read: mainly low brass with a few trumpets) can and have stomped peeps from the football team at our school. Badly.

That's a good point, but I'm going to call it a physical art.
