^hahah thats great
our band at our school is kinda in the middle we are lumped with dance team and cheerleaders. kinda a sport but not really you need to get physicals but yet we can have extremely long practices if we were a sport we would have to leave at 6 and not be able to start as early as we do in the summer so we are in the middle zone

yep i do. i mean, it's not like a difficult, tiring sport, but as my other band friends say, ' "Marching band is more of a sport than cheerleading." ' and i mean, you have to walk and (in some cases) you have to carry heavy instruments. and in like, show marching u have to do dancing and stuff. so yes, i consider it a sport.

^^Brasscaptain, I think that's where we belong. We are a performing art that happens to be strenuous, kind of like ice skating. I even advocated for us to be placed with them in the yearbook.

Its more of a sport than golf... I think that it is an athletic activity that you can compete in, how else would you define sport? Simply playing an instrument can qualify as an athletic activity that you can compete in. Ever feel out of breath after playing a particularly long phrase? My horn teacher gets onto me about doing daily workouts in both aerobic activity and strength. If you aren't in shape aerobically, you will not be able to sustain phrases and take deep relaxed breaths in order to make beautiful music. if you do not have the strength to easily hold up your instrument for a long period of time, you will have poor posture and your air will also suffer in that way. Not only that, but you have to have strength to play the horn itself. You have to gradually build up your "chops" so that your facial muscles can handle the amount of air passing through them. My teacher says that if you finish a performance (whether it's just one piece, or a full recital) and you are not completely shot, then you did not put everything you had into it. You are also able to compete in many competitions on any instrument. Physical activity and competitiveness does not qualify something to be a sport.

May I ask, then, what does? (I'm still in total agreement, I just want to hear your argument).

Okay, after reading all this, I have to change my mind. I think it's an art, (definetly better than a sport ), but yes, it deserves much more recognition. I mean, my school has an amazing marching band and lots of people are obsessed, but we still get made fun of constantly.
