Ack! Well, for the past few years (except last year), my old band wasn't able to do solo/ensemble, because our BD was hit with a serious illness.

This year, I played first two movements of Sonata III in G Major (Handel) and got a 2. (1 = best, 5=worst) I was perfectly fine with the first movement, but the second movement, I underestimated myself and started way too slow. Our ensemble, however, got a 1 (what was the judge smoking when she scored us? oh well. ) and we're going to State Solo and Ensemble with it. ;D

Well, my competition's this saturday, and I've got four pieces for it: Horn solo (Morceau de Concert, Saint-Saens), Brass quintet (Bugler's holiday), Vocal solo (Sure on this Shining night [baritone range]), and Vocal duet (La Ci Darem La Mano, Mozart). I'm confident each has the potential to go to state, but I'll let you know after the weekend how everything goes.

so, as promised, here are my results:
Horn solo: *1 Vocal solo: *1 Vocal duet: *1 Brass quintet: 1
so I'm going to state on all but the quintet. Much improvement over last year! I'm happy.

Well... This is a bit of a sore spot for me. Our system is 1= best; 5= go home and never come back again. I had been doing AMAZING on my solo- and almost guaranteed 1 unless I got the room 1 judge (next story). And then... an HOUR before I was going to go, my hand... freezes up and I can't play the 16th runs (And this is the Motzart k622 Rondo. 16th notes are the piece). So yeah, two. And on my alto solo... It was the BEST I ever played it except for a bombed altissimo note and a trip or two- but not really anything noticeable. They judge awarded 3 1's the entire day (30+ kids): Two flutes & an ensemble. It "didn't sound natural." I had had to learn the piece in about three weeks due to a shiipping problem- I ordered it mid- October, it came mid- January. No, with the amount of 16ths in that piece it isn't going to sound natural. I'm playing uaccs from now on. Piano screws me up.

well, let's see...i took 2 things to s&e this year, a solo and a clarinet choir. in our top band (varsity band) it is required to take a piece to contest, and since many people don't like soloing, we get to go with our section. unfortunately, the clarinetists dont get along very well so sectionals is always horrible. one of my friends got out of it this year to be in the woodwind ensemble...i was so jealous. anyway, we played the 2nd movement from some miniature jazz suite, or something and we got a 1. then for my solo, i played the second and third movements of Stamitz's Concerto No. 2 for clarinet. i got a 1. i should have gotten perfect, but i was nervous, and my altissimo notes were sharp. erg.

Sharp altissimo notes? What strange planet do you hail from? Mine and all my section's are always flat!

mine usually are too, but either i was so nervous they were sharp, or the judge didnt know what he was talking about...which is also possible i suppose.
oh yeah, and i made a mistake, it was Concerto No. 3, not 2.

I'm going to state, along with 2 other percussion soloists. But none of our percussion ensembles made it, so it'll be a bit more lonely than last year. Anyways, I really need to look at my solo again; I haven't touched it in about 2-3 weeks, and state is next month.

I've only done it a few times. Here's the listing;
6th grade - clarinet solo - I 6th grade - clarinet & flute duet - I 7th grade - clarinet solo - III (i didn't tune and it was an annoying piece with to many fermatas i didn't hold out long enough) 7th grade - clarinet & flute duet - II (we forgot to tune, again)
Our scale is probably like everyone else, I being the best V being the worst.

I'm a sophomore right now. I've played a class one since 8th grade. I've gotten a one on all of them. :] I advanced to state both times in high school. Results weren't very good at state last year. The lady gave me a 3 because she didn't like my cadenza. I played the first movement to the third mozart horn concerto. It says cadenza ad lib. I got a famous cadenza from my previous teacher. It shocked me when the judge sayed she'd never heard it. she was suppose to be a horn player. Makes you wonder.... O but she said I had good mozart style and some other stuff like that. Also my piano player wasn't very good. She rushed BIG time. the judge said that too. which it wasn't my fault. This year I played the EASIEST piece. not because I'm a slacker but because I had no choice. Well states in April..... hopefully i do better than last year. (finger's crossed)

I am still shocked our group got a I at the most recent competition. Honestly, we were the "Chocolate Thunder from Down Under Brass Quartet" made up of 2 trumpets, a Clarinet, and a tenor sax.

I got a 1 in both my solo and ensemble at districts.
I got a 2 in my solo and a 1 in my ensemble at state. After 4 years, 6 songs (4 of which made it to state), I finally got a 1!
