Rating System: I-V, I is the best, V is the worst. I've been doing it since 7th grade (when they forced me to do it lol) and I plan to this year and the rest of my HS career. It's fun
7th: Trumpet Trio-I Solo-II (I was nervous. lol)
8th: Brass Quintet-II Trumpet Trio-II Solo-I (Yay!!!)
9th: Who knows but I'll get a I!! Haha

Well, we are graded 1-5 1 being best, 5 being worst. We also have 2 contests we go to for solos, 3 if we make it to state. I am not sure what I am doing for a solo this year. I should probably pick something out because our first contest is in like a month or something. Our band is doing Kentucky 1800 and Air for Band. My freshman year League = 2 Regionals = 2 Sophomore League = 1 Regionals = 1 State = 1 Junior League = 1 Regionals = 1 State = 2 (stupid judge who knew absolutely NOTHING about the oboe....he judge trumpets, frenhc horns, and me. grrr...stupid judge)

Oh snap! How is your solo music graded? The grading system that I'm familiar with is: 1- Junior high, beginning high school, easy 2- High school, more demanding than 1, but still fairly simple 3- College, rhythmically/musically demanding, but not at a professional level 4- Conservatory, more demanding than 3 5- Professional, uses unconventional technique I'm not sure what the exact specifications are, but our music is graded 1-6. As for band...ones and twos are elementary school level and occasionally for not so great middle schools. Middle schools usually play 3s, the better ones play 4s and sometimes 5s. High schools are anywhere from 3-6 depending on the level. In wind ensemble we play mostly 6s with a few 5s. Solos are similar. I've been playing mostly 5s the last few years simply because I've liked them more than the 6s my teacher has presented me with. I hate it when people play a piece just because of its grade...

Last year, I got a 1 on my solo and I hope I can do that again. I'm playing Beautiful Colorado and I memorized it right away. So if I get a 1 again this year, I qualify for the state Solo and Ensemble! Our Solo and Ensemble is Feb 3.

We just got our schedual for it today. Me and my friend have our solo's at the same time which sucks because I wanted to listen to her and then I realized that it's impossible for us to have them at the same time because we have the same piano player.
Our solo and ensemble is Feburary 10th and chamber ensemble is Feburary 3rd. I can't wait for January to be over.

Our Solo/Ensemble is April 13th, and it'll be my first ever. What's it like? I'm so nervous it's not even funny.

I always welcome Solo and Ensemble as a performance rather than an audition where you get actual feedback rather than a "thank you" and dismissal or whatever. I always get really nervous though anyway. For us in Maryland, the judge picks a random scale (up to four sharps/flats) that we have to play and we also play a chromatic starting on whatever we want. And of course the piece as well! Whenever I finish I get this huge rush of relief. And luckily I've had good judges in the past that give me helpful feedback. It's a really awesome experience, I think.

I don't have any trouble with flats, but sharps always present a problem for me.

I didn't know we had to do scales! Hopefully it's different for our contest, because nobody in our grade memorizes scales, except for one or two people.

^You being one of them. You have nothing to worry about for Solo/Ensemble, what with the private lessons you get!

^ Just take deep breaths. I know it's hard! It's sooooooo hard, actually, but it truly helps. You can also eat a banana. Make sure you time it right, though. I freak out when I audition, too. You just have to believe in yourself (also hard to do sometimes). I know it's hard, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. Solo/Ensemble freaked me out last year, but I just have to go in there with a different attitude this year. Good luck! Just have fun with it! For All-State we have a 1st round, 2nd round, and a final round. In OK you can only audition for All-State as a 10th-12th grader. I'm in 10th grade, and this year, I was in the finals, and I was nervous...Seriously. To me, it was the biggest audition of my high school career, or so it seemed like. I at a couple of bananas, and I took deep breaths, and I went in there...and I simply had fun with it. I went in there to do business, but I had fun. It's kind of hard to think about having fun when you have pressure on you. I made All-State...and I thought the pressure was on this year...It's going to be even more stressful for the next two years. But, just go in there, and try your hardest, but have fun. You wont be as nervous if you also KNOW that you KNOW your music. Good luck!!! (just have fun with it!)

excitttting news. alto sax solo: II. ;D dude, I was happy to get anything over a III. I played really bad in comparison to what I could've done. and now I don't even have the option of going to states, which is good, because a hard flute solo+a sax solo=scary. flute duet w/ Flutist Kes: I. ;D yay! flute solo: I!!!!!!!!! ;D you have no idea how happy this makes me! and I had no idea what would come of my solo, honestly. I worked my butt off on it. EDIT: haha, here's my day-after-S&E comments. sax solo: I deserved a II. actually, I think I more deserved a III, but I might not've actually sounded as bad as I thought I did. all through the thing I was like "this is so baaaaad"... but I ended up getting a II. I was a little surprised, but not at the same time. I think I really did get some great comments from my judge (Dr.Plank), because some of them were actually things I don't think I've heard before, and I agreed with them. I always love getting pointers on sax. flute duet: lol, Kes and I were staring the guy down after our duet to see what rating he gave us. the rating cards were on this table that you could just barely see through the window... lol. it was great. but anyways... we actually could've played better than we did then, but I agreed totally with the stuff the judge said. flute solo: ... I'm not even sure what the judge said about it, besides "fantastic solo", because since she had me play the whole thing (which I knew was a good thing even before I started, since my solo is 5 minutes long), she only had 20 seconds to talk. there were parts I screwed up on though that I shouldn't have screwed up, but I didn't see her write anything down most of the times I screwed up, so either she just let it go or I made it sound like I didn't screw up.
