though it was back in feburary for us, got an excellent which considering i had about 3 weeks to learn it was an accomplishment. of course would've loved to go to states, not upset at all about it. lmao 3 more years to make it and try out for all-state as well.
good game.
us clarinets will be attempting dodecaphonic essay for next years then i'm playing a solo and transposing a violin solo for kicks to see what the judge has to say because i love that piece on clarinet anyways

Where I'm from it's a 5-1 scale, 5 being the worst and 1 being the best. I just recently got into solo and ensemble, so this was my first time: 2007 Districts: Flute solo- 1 - Superior Flute Quartet- 1 - Superior Chamber Winds- 2 - Excellent (This was composed of the ten best players on each instrument, I replaced the first chair flutist who at the time, has a serious case of senoritis, the day before festival) Flute Trio- 2 - Excellent (I was rushing, while the other was dragging, and the other was just right...) 2007 States: Flute Solo- 1 - Superior (Surprised me really... I thought I was going to get a poor. My flute had broken that morning and luckily a friend was there who wasn't in the quartet, so I used her flute, which was just really bad. I took everything half speed and then doubletime through passages that needed double tounging.... the judge gave me a + in tempo) Flute Quartet- 1 - Superior (Really surprised we got a superior at districts really..) Where I'm from, we have a grading system of difficulty for music that ranges from levels 1 through 7. If you play a piece that is a 5 or higher, you can take it to Solo and ensemble states. I was the only person to receive 2 Superiors at states that year Only 3 out of the 5 ensembles/solos that went got superiors, My solo, Flute Quartet, and the Bassoon Solo (but the guy who played the Bassoon pretty much sight-read his solo... and also played in a Woodwind Quintet, Brass Quintet on trumpet, and Jazz Band states on trombone that day)

I was with a percussion ensemble last year that got a 1 at districts, but a two at state. We were pretty surprised at it all.

A 1* is the highest you can get for me, followed by 1, 2, etc. No one realized you could get a 4, though, until me and a friend got one on our trumpet duet (I play horn and he plays tuba... we haven't really played trumpet since 8th grade, and that hardly counts.)
Anyways, do you guys already have your s/e pieces picked out/practiced/ready for competition? I felt like being early this year, so I have the Concert Rondo of Mozart's second Horn Concerto down and ready to perform, only to realize it's not on the list, so I fell onto my plan B solo, the Saint-Saens Concertpiece. It's amazing, I heart it. What are you guys working on?

I played Festival Solo by James Collins and...well, I'll tell you what happened.
I was fine warming up and all. I came in, played my first scale and it was all good. Then I started my chromatic scale, and all of a sudden, my notes weren't coming out right. My teacher looked at my clarinet, said I had an air leak, and temporarily fixed it. I played my chromatic alright, but when it came time to play my solo, it started messing up again! Finally, I had to play on my teacher's clarinet. Apparently I did alright, because I got a 2. It was my first solo ever. =)

Last year, me and 8 other clarinets went to the local college to do this ensemble piece by Mozart. We had to wait a few hours for the results to get posted, so I forgot about it. However, when I came back to check to see how we did, we got a 1+!
I'm just hoping we'll get at least a 1 this year. We've been practicing since November.

Last year was so dumb for me. Warming up, I didn't think to bring my music in to the room, but I started playing anyway, and it turned out I had my solo memorized. So I played through it once, spot checked one hard part, then played it again. I had a long time before I had to perform, so I went back at about the halfway point and played it yet again. So far everything had been going smoothly, my tone and control was all there, etc. I go into the room, start playing a little warmup arpeggio... and suddenly can't play for crap. I don't usually get stage fright; I've been performing for as long as I can remember, and it's never been a problem. I had even just gotten a 1* (highest ranking, ticket to state) on my vocal solo. But no, I couldn't hardly play a note.
I went back in after everyone had finished and asked the judge if he'd hear me again- not for points, but just so I could get some more useful critique. That time, naturally, I played fine. Dumb...
Anyway, I've been practicing my solo since mid-August, so I'm not too worried this time.
