Wow, oscarisamazing, you're a real jerk towards woodwinds. You know that? I don't think I've ever met a brass person as rude as you. Congrats.

The oboe is actually the only high woodwind that I can respect. Its sound can be used so many different ways, and the embouchure looks like it would be a *****. Double-reeds are, to my mind, as close to brass as you can get without actually being brass...well that and contraalto clarinets and bass saxes. lay off the woodwinds, would you?

I can only think of two reasons one might dislike soprano sax: A) Jazz Fusion ruined it and made it lame (but come on, it's fusion that's lame, not the instrument!) B) You play it If you play it (as well as another sax) you'll find that the pitch tendencies are all over the place. But because most people who get their hands on sop sax know how to listen (so they're pretty good about tuning in my experience) and because it just isn't as piercing as, say, oboe or picc. Otherwise, how can you not love them? Oh right, it's an opinion. I forgot. I'm kind of suprised you think oboe is the closest to the brass family of the woodwinds. Double reeds have a very unique sound (that I love of course) but I don't think it's really any more like that of brass than the other woodwinds? I guess it's crisper than a flute and brighter than a clarinet, but... ?? I'd say sax is the best cross-over (or horn, but obviously from the other side). Saxes are actually really amazing in all the different tones they can get and all the instruments they blend with. They can be (mostly the jazzers) almost as bad about mouthpieces as oboists are about reeds too. It wasn't completely clear how Adolph Sax wanted the mouthpieces to be or what they should be made of. And it's not completely clear exactly what tone he wanted. So for example my brother can do pretty good "impressions" on his tenor of both a clarinet and a cello. (Jack Sparrows theme: so cool on tenor sax!!) Of the woodwinds, saxes are most likely to have to blend with brass. Altos often double horns and tenors often double t-bones or euphs. I have a friend who can be, frankly, a bit a of a brass snob. I get kind of frustrated by the way she talks about woodwinds. Apparently we are pathetic, lesser instruments without capacity for expression. The punch of the last statement is in the fact that woodwinds tend not to be able to get nearly as loud as brass. (This is kinda ironic from a horn player isn't it? Can you guys get any louder? Maybe... stand up turn around?) And the fact is she can play much louder on the thing than I can on the oboe and certainly on the english horn. And have you ever heard a bassoon try to play loud? I mean I love them but... Saxes on the other hand can get stinkin loud. They can get that edgy tone brass is known for. So obe like brass? Not really. Sax like brass? When they want.

I guess the hyperbole in my statements about woodwinds don't come out as well in text. That said, I apologize for being a jerk about piccolo's and such--their sound just annoys me.

I don't care if it isn't your thing. Doesn't mean you get to make fun of it all you want while it makes fun of others. I take much offense to that. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can shout your rude opinion to everyone.

well i dont know if this is just one of my clarinet buddies, who got me to hate it, but id have to say the clarinet. Iv been in a practice room with one of them, and their sound is PIERCING to my ears. It hurts so much. I mean when played good, its amazing to hear. But other than that, the sound of a bad clarinet sound makes me want to kick a baby..

Clarinets just sound bad if they go too high. Especially in jazz. But I love it when they play low....and don't go above, say, middle G. Sorry, soprano clarinets. Treble clef is not for you.
I love bass and contrabass clarinets. Go low woodwinds!!!

I like high clarinet when it's played so you can't tell it's high. Benny Goodman was good at this.

i think piccolo falls into that category of Instruments That People Only Like If They're Played Well.
Examples:
-Pretty much all woodwinds (except maybe saxophones) particularly the oboe -French Horns -Strings, mostly the violin
It takes quite a bit of talent to have good sound come out of any high range instrument, particularly the piccolo, and some people have decided that because some people struggle with it, therefore no one must be able to do it and therefore they don't like the piccolo.
personally, i think the people who play lower ranged instruments aren't used to the higher pitched instruments' shrillness. i can personally vouch that i'm not crazy about the violin because I play viola and am used to the lower range.

Hmm. I think my least favorite instrument'd be viola. It can't decide whether it's a violin or a cello, and it tunes to the same notes as us cellos, which annoys me in no end. really? all the cellists i know like the viola. i don't think of it as indecision. it's more like the best of both worlds. if we want to play low, we can play low, if we want to play high, we can play high, plus it's much more portable than a cello. i would've played cello if my mom hadn't refused to haul on around. IMO, violas (and violists for that matter) get no respect. i'm sorry it looks like a violin but sounds like a cello. We violists (or at least I) worship cellists and only wish that we could be more like them.

I hate to say this to everyone, but I hate Clarinets. I don't hate their sound when they are played well, but I hate rehearsing when I sit in front of them. They really have some squeaking issues. That may just be me, though. Trombones are amazing.

My least favorite instrument would be the flute. Usually when there's more than one of them. *cringes*
