I just started bassoon and its wicked awsome! haha my crazt band director thinks ill be good because i can play in tune. I just bought like 5 reads to get one thats in tune, gotta love bassoon! just outta curiosity if you have ur own bassoon what kind? any sugestions for good starter/intermediate wood ones? i meen someting cheep but thats good also?? thanks! I play on a plastic accent one at school, and mannn that thing has no balance, my top thumb always gets caught when i go to play the Db ick!!! if you want to get this kind dont! although its reallly durable not that i would know.... Oh my... an Accent bassoon. I can not imagine such a thing. I have an Accent Bb Clarinet, and it's always gave me troubles. (but I'm not convinced a lot of it wasn't me... lol.) Anyways, I got a Fox Renard 222 bassoon a year and a half ago. It has done well... In my experience, it's a great non professional bassoon... but it's a little expensive...

My bassoon friend's teacher told her to get a renard 240.- apparently the 220 is a solo type horn but the 240 has a better ensemble sound.

ya, accent bassoons suck in my experiance. soo the e is always always sharp, i have tried to use like 4 different reeds and its always sharp. i gotta ask my lessons teacher about it, maby its just me. but if not my band director, who bought me this new bassoon wont be happy.
ya you could tell he didnt do much resherch about bassoons. he had an old wood one and plastic one. and i think they were probually better then this but to fix both (i dunno why both) it cost the same as this amazing (not!) accent bassoon. i really want to get a fox but my parents arent to keen about that, i am trying to persude them, but so far i got to find away to buy it my self. haha thas gonna take alot of saving up.

If that's referring to my suggestion, 222 and 220 are two different types. 240 is definitely better than 222, though. I would have got one, but it would have taken several months for it to come in, and it was very vital at the time that I got to learn it as soon as possible.

(I knew that. I'm figuring 222 is like a student 220, in the way that an e13 is like a student r13 clarinet, since you said it was non- professional)

hey i dont know if this has already been mentioned here, but just a question: how many of you make your own reeds, how hard is it, and how many did you have to make to get good?
I have only started bassoon so i am in no hurry to make my own...yet. but i am just reallly curious. because my instructer said its really hard. also any funny stories about making reeds? and what kind of tools do you need to make/fix reeds? haha lots of questions.

All the bassoonists I know don't make their own- they, however, do use things like sandpaper to fix the reeds that aren't perfect.

My bassoon teacher taught some of us to make them, but we haven't actually made one ourselves yet.
Yeah that doesn't make much sense, but some of those tools are expensive.
