Has anyone here gotten a chance to play contrabassoon? I've just started it for the second half of the semester and it's a bit of a monster. (We have an orchestral model, so with the peg in that I play with, it's about 5'8") I'm falling in love with it's finicky tendencies and the difficulties of playing in tune already. Can anyone suggest a fairly easy contrabassoon or bassoon solo with limited range? I'd love to be able to do a contra piece on my recital next fall.

contra is so much fun! I have yet to play it here in college, but i've played it in honor bands and festivals in the past. The reed is like slapping two pieces of plywood together and wrapping it with some reed and wire...that's what it feels like in your mouth!

Yes, I got to play it a few times in college. I always felt like my whole head was vibrating when I'd hit the low Bb.

In regards to reed tools, I've been looking for a reamer, but I'm not really keen on spending $100 for one. Although I guess it would be worth it for a really good reamer, like the Rieger. However, it'd be nice if I could get a decent reamer for a lower price. Any suggestions?

Sousalover, I hope you get to learn bassoon some more. It's a lot of fun! ^_^
Going to a much older topic from October I'd like to ask exactly how long the contrabassoon goes. I've heard it goes lower than the regular bassoon (that's common sense, though, am I right?) However I'd like to know exactly how low it goes.
We don't have any at my college. There was one at my high school, but since I didn't play bassoon back than and it was reserved for the top bassoonist in the Wind Ensemble I had no chance of even touching it. T_T

as the newly crowned school owned instrument manager i am now in charge of the bassoons... there's one black pipe that's really old and worn out that no one wants to use- my bassoon friend and I have a name for it- Piece of Crap...
