Renard 222's are pretty good student models.

All my reeds (4 of them) just died on me at the same time. I don't think it's the weather because they are pretty old (4 months) and I've been working them hard. I try to gaurd against this happening by starting one reed a week in my new rotation so the first reed I start to break in is a month older than the last one I break in. I think I'm going to upgrade a bit and get some better reeds, I've been playing long enough that I believe it will be beneficial to play on higher quality reeds. I'm practicing about an hour and a half average a day so I want something that isn't going to quit on me and will provide a tone I can gauge my progress off of.
Anyone else ever have their entire reed rotation fail at once?

On the contrary, I discovered today while working on my top four reeds that two of my "practice" reeds that I thought I had worn out are now working well with the change in weather. My "performance" reed was being uncooperative earlier today while I was practicing, but I think it was being tempermental on account of the snow.
I just hope that I have reeds that will work no matter what the weather may be like for my jury in two weeks.

this is more concerning solo and ensemble but i need a good bassoon quartet to play. and by good i mean hard. and fun to play, of course. any ideas please? last year i had a trio playing gavotte and hornpipe by purcell, but it was easy and pretty boring. although there was one part that sounded cool. it was the only class I ensemble that was on the list for ensembles. help?

As far as ensemble music goes, you may be able to find either Bubonic Bassoon quartet arrangements (although several of them are not suitable for solo and ensemble) or you may consider playing a brass quartet on bassoons.

AHH!! Stay away from the "Master Solos Series" books (I think that must be what you're playing from or at least a book from the same company, because they arrange those pieces for almost every instrument). They're terribly boring. There are lots of interesting pieces for double reed choirs and various other combinations of instruments with bassoon, what is the instrumentation you're looking for?

four bassoons. i know there are some all bassoon quartets out there, and i wanted to see if anyone's played any interesting ones. and it does have to be written specifically for bassoon to qualify for solo and ensemble. even so, i still have to check if it's on the list. but it would be great if you had any ideas.

Look in to Ray Pizzi. He writes Jazz and blues for bassoon and he has some quartet pieces.
Also, If I ever said "This piece is boring", Theres a good chance my insturctor would slap me in the face.
If its boring to you, then you sound boring. Notablly there are pices that are just CR** to start with, but for the most part if A piece is boring to you, its becuse your not playing with enough Expression.
"You will never give 4 quarter notes the same value.....EVER."
Say something with the piece, when your playing music its no different then when you are speaking, We dont talk in nice square little segments . We lengthen some parts shorten others, and choose volume all based on what we are trying to say.
For instance, you dont just say 'look out for that truck. you say "DONT GET HIT BY THAT TRUCK!!!!!!!!"
Music is always saying something, with or without vocals.
Lets see..... what objective advice can I give now
No one wants to see your barlines, so dont show them.
The down beat is boring, anyone who is anyone knows where it is, your insulting them by accenting the first beat. (unless your the soloist, and the orchestra is off.....when you are solo.....you are the new god.)
Exxagerate.....A LOT with your sound. What you hear is far from what they hear. If you want them to hear happy, make it really happy. If you want it to be sad play it to the point where it sounds so cheesy it makes you want to laugh its so overdone.
Always play to the guy sitting in the 47 row.....even when there is no 47th row.
Mistakes are important, so make lots of them, and make them obvious......just dont look obvious when you make them. I F***** up my Recital on friday, any one with a score would have been crying at the terror i reaped on Mozarts bassoon concerto. I stood up to a lot of applause, and the guy with perfect pitch said I sounded good.
The music is only important to you, no one cares about what your doing, or what your saying with it, but make sure they know you are doing and saying something.
Technique is nothing, play the run a hundred times, you'll get it. The more exact is is as far as the rythem the dryer its going to sound.
People would rather hear you play it and mess up, as long as its interesting.
we are Musicians, we play music, Music is art. Art that dosent make a point, or say something, is called garbage......or to be artisticlly perscice We call it "Modern Art".
My dissertation is done, do what you will.

by boring i meant easy. of course we still played the piece to the best of our ability, as should be done with all pieces of music. i was just trying to find something more difficult and more of a challenge. anyway i've found something now. thanks for the advice though.

I feel so out of this topic. I really should keep up more with this thread, as there have been some really good discussions that i have a little knowledge about (and a few questions about!)
In response to the quartet thing, check out this website for some sightreading..
http://F*gotizm.narod.ru/mp3_1-eng.htm ( i don't know the legality of it though...and the asterik stands for an 'a',btw)
I've looked at some stuff in the past, just to look over new things, but I haven't ever had the chance to read over the ensemble pieces (never enough bassoonists around..)

Has anyone else come across unaccompanied solos? I've looked at a few movements of the 2nd Bach cello suite, but the problem with string music is that there isn't really much of a place to breathe. Currently, I'm looking at two of Mignone's 16 Valsas for unaccompanied bassoon. I must say I am more of a fan of these than the cello suites and would highly recommend finding the Frank Morrelli recordings of the Mignone Valsas to anyone that likes solo bassoon from the modern period.

I have an emergency reed situation.
These are beginning to happen more and more frequently...urgh...I just need to get better on making my own reeds. But until that time comes, I'm in serious need for commercial brand recommendations that I can get fast. I have a fairly good supplier, and I was going to try out the Fox model KJI's (I don't know if anyone's heard of them, but a fellow player who I have extreme respect for recommended them). But! I haven't heard from the supplier or received my reeds in two weeks, where they usually arrive in five at the most. At the moment it seems like he might be ill, but that's beside the point.
Point being, which brand should I get for something reliable? I prefer warm/round/purple/chocolate-y sounds to something very bright if it makes any difference.
Gah! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It really depends on where you live. If you live in a semi-arid climate at a relatively high elevation, I would recommend Jones reeds- they are the largest double reed company in the U.S. for a reason. Other than that, I wouldn't know who to recommend since I've been playing on handmade reeds for the past six and a half years and am a bit out of the loop on what reeds will work in which climates.

I have always liked measons... Chartier are good to. Sad to say....well firstly this happened close to a month ago. and im just now on a computer that lets me sign in to the forum....something weird happened when the forum switched hosts... and my PC wont sign me in. firstly.... emergency reed situation is latin for S.O.L if you dont know what that means then PM me becuse its vulgar. You have to know what reeds you play good on where you live, and its important to have ATLEAST 4 reeds that you can play on. So if one breaks you have 3 spares.....chances are one of them will play ok. If i wasnt broke Id have 8 reeds. Sorry to hear about it....but sometimes theres nothing you can do. One time I thrashed my reed right before a concert....against my face.....not fun.... I had one other reed and it sucked....luckily I was second bassoon at the time and the first bassoonist was really good. I use (checks) www.advantage-usa.com/DoubleReeds.html#etudegood site, pretty reliable, and so far There reeds come to me without to much damage from shipping.....and they come from the newyork area....and im in Cali.... sadly it gets here faster then local mail..... becuse the Post OFFICE IS STUPID. Dont get me on that rant....but yeah....My friend sent a letter cross town....and it went to jersey and back before they got it. but good site, pretty good delivery. So how is everyone?
