It's a good book for beginning bassoonists that are taking lessons. I had to review it along with several other method books last spring to prepare for the jury that determines whether or not I'm officially a junior. That's cool that he lives so near by you.

Its really cool that you get to teach. I sort of get to do that spring semester. 2 of my friends are taking music theory 1 then, and since my college campus is small (specially for music) the music theory (102) and (103) are together. I love my teacher. He could teach at USC, or about any where, (he has shown us letters and the like) but he teaches here. And he teaches 3 theory classes for free. He only gets paid for one class of music theory becuse all 4 classes are at the same time. Somehow we are still some of the best at theory in So cal. So i get to help them along.
enough praising.
I Am SOOOO EXCITED for you. ^_^.
I have juries in December for my applied music. and my instructor Is really good (my NEW instructor...i have now had 3 total) He got lessons from one of New york phil's principle bassoonists (he was principle for 7- 9 years) The guy lived in his neighborhood, and gave free lessons. My instructor fell pray to the Doctors. He could have been Proffesional, but became a doctor instead. Now he plays with the comunity group and the symphonic band. Why he is out here in the middle of no where I have no clue.
So i learned some new things. Emphasis on 2, not on one. and Broken rythym drills (which are SOOO boring, but I am already improving my speed)
The 2 thing is necesary for Mozarts concerto for bassoon (K. 191) If you look at the pice most of the new phrases occur on 2 not one. So you emphasize 2, not 1. One will emphasize itself, but 2 is more important.
We also worked a lot on expresion. Which I am still weak on....i hate being so shy and mellow sometimes....
Yeah I am writting a novel. Mostly becuse i dont know when I will have internet again (in general it is being dumb) and becuse my comp wont log me in to this site at all.

Tomorrow will be the test of how much the class and low register fingerings I taught on Tuesday was retained by my classmates. We're having a test in the class on playing F and C major scales. I'm also wondering what the instructor (who is now back in town) will have the other bassoon major and myself play, since she has already heard both of us play these scales several times within the past couple of years.
Do nearly all bassoonists dread scales? I think I've finally reached the point in my scales that I can shock the freshman with the tempo and ease with which I can play most scales, including the extremely high register (going up to E flat if my reeds are working, or E if the bassoon gods smile upon me). I don't see why so many people seem to dislike scales.

I just found out today I'm going to be playing bassoon for a little bit longer....
I don't dread scales. I had a good time with some scales, granted I played nothing more difficult than an E-flat scale and in one octave.

I don't dread scales... I'm working on my range, and I suppose that can be a bit monotonous, but for the most part scales are spiffy things indeed.
I found out I'm going to be taking a step into your shoes arctic. Evidentally my instructor wants me to help him teach a woodwind tech. at Shepherd University in January or February... So I'll be teaching 20 kids how to play the bassoon! The great part is, I'm a High School junior... I'm not even in college yet! I'm going to be teaching people who are 3, maybe 4 years older then me... that's pretty cool, in my book!
For the record, I might not have a superior range (I'm good up to the high Bb but anything above that is sketchy (the fingerings, I can play them)) but I certainly can hold my own on the instrument now... I can't believe I've been playing since January, it's insane how quickly the time has gone. And how much better I have gotten...
*remembers the first sounds he made on a bassoon and laughes*

i love my scales. there shiny. *joke....and a bad one at that*
i only dread the weird ones like F#. When i have to start thinking in flats or in sharps i enter a rather morose state of being.
What fingering do you use for your high E's and Eb's? I hit them rather recentlly on accident.I took my D fingering and added my E key, which also hits the Eb/D# key. but i dont get consistent results with it. SOmetimes It plays with no problom, other times there aint a chance in Nibleheim.........*obscure mythology reference in place of swear word*
and you need to get AIm....mostly becuse i am much mor likely to be on aim then MSN.

Oh man, I just started playing bassoon again after about 4-5 months of not even touching it, and I have forgotten a lot of things. I sound even worse than I did at the end of playing for about 7 months with weak reed. I forgot how much endurance it took to play that thing! My left hand kind of still hurts, and I can feel my embouchure getting weaker as I practice longer. I had to quit after like 15 minutes.
And I never gave myself any credit when I played it back then... I didn't think it was a big deal, and just now I'm realizing that bassoon was kind of a difficult instrument, and that I did get decent at it for where I am.
I am supposed to play bassoon until our Christmas concert, and then I'm back on clarinet (my main instrument, which no longer seems to be my main instrument). I don't want to quit playing bassoon though, and I'd like to be decent at it. It scared me when I forgot things.

For high E flat, I can fairly consistantly play it by fingering a D and adding the E flat key. High E is more of a challenge, since only once did I mess around with a reed to get it to play the high E (by fingering E flat and adding the E key). Unfortunately, shortly after that I made a minor adjustment to the reed so that it wouldn't be so hard and it stopped playing high E's.
As for not practicing for five days, that is kind of sad. I wish I could stand to practice more than I do, but after spending about 45 hours with my bassoon over the past two weeks my wrist is not up to doing additional physical practicing. (Cursed wrist problems don't mix well with playing in a pit orchestra....) Most of my practicing has been mental lately, but there is only so much you can do without the instrument in your hands.

What kind of bassoon did you get? If it's wood, be careful in breaking it in.

Congratulations! I would like....a nice bassoon, and I believe nearly any bassoon is better than the one I play. I should take pictures some day. It's not that bad, but it's certainly not good. Good luck and have fun! ;D

It's a Fox Renard 222 with a High D Key. I wanted a Fox Renard 240, but they said they'd have to order it (which would take six months, they said) plus they were having a sale and it wouldn't effect the 240 if we ordered it. Oh well. I like it. XD
