I can't wait till Jazz band starts. Ours is more a winter/spring thing, and I'm likely to get Lead TB because the former 1st chair graduated and the concert band 1st chair doesn't play loud enough.

^And unusual, thought not in a bad way. Our band instrumentation changes. Freshman year top ensemble had 6 trumpets, 4 bones, 4 altos, 2 tenors, 2 baris (me!), a piano, 2 drummers, a guitar, and a bass. Last year we went old-style and had 4 trumpets, 4 bones (3 when our bass bone dropped), 2 altos, 2 tenors, one bari (me!), 2 drummers, a piano, a guitar, and a bass. For our third director in as many years... who knows? He says there isn't enough interest for 2 bands, which we always have, but it would be too big for one band. I don't want one jazz band. EVen if I don't make the top ensemble, I still want there to be the competitivie ensemble and the, well, not competitive one. I don't want a huge band where you go to contests and they have to drag out extra chairs for you. We find out audition results this week... I'll post whether I make top, bottom, or neither. Well, I made top ensemble. I'm the only bari in it this year, and somehow, I have to be heard over 4 altos and 2 tenors. *builds lung strength*

You can hear the bari, believe me. I can hear our (Freshman) bari across teh football field with the whole sax, clarinet and flute sections between us.

Well, now that most of you have finally started jazz band......
What tunes are you playing?
We are currently tackling a very ambitious Gordon Goodwin tune, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Wish us luck and skill; we need both.

Wait, people have jazz seasons? We just start when the director feels like staying late (because we actually got to switch it to after school!) All we're doing are just some really easy pieces. The old BD was going to have us play Los Brujos de Cisiano (I can't spell it, sorry) and Backburner. But, alas, new BD switched it to the easy stuff like "Music from Grease!" and other simple tunes.

Note to oscar: Woodwinds really dont matter in a mb especially one your size. If you can hear him with the whole TB and trumpet section btw the two of you... that's impressive. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes q?

Gordon Goodwin!! Eric Marienthal is amazing. We usually play more standards. We basically have this huge jazz band folder with a million songs (ok maybe 100...) and it stays the same unless our teacher decides to take one out of put one it. It gets really annoying because we never sound good at any song, they all sound ok, and I'm getting tired of playing the same tunes over and over again.

.....So we went to this festival and we were in DIvision 3....we placed ahead of this other jazz band and received our umpteenth Superior rating in a row. I thought we did really well, and the performance itself was a lot a fun. But of course, they had to give the 5 foot tall trophy for "overall best jazz band" to some Division 4 huge school that won every other trophy in the festival for concert band and chorus and such. Ooh, I hate that....I bet we were better than them....
We did get "Best Trumpet section" though. The trumpets rejoiced since they never won one last year and every other section did.
Anyone else go to festivals and such?

You would think that by my name my school would a have a jazz band? But no... Our "jazz band" is pretty much me digging through all the old file cabinets pulling out books that have been there since the 70's jamming w/ my boyfriend on the drums. It's all good though, because I play with people outside my school and I'm auditioning for Young Sounds of Arizona soon..

We played a gig at this upscale country club for some important guy's retirement.....basically we were set up in a stone passageway and played while people mulled around drinking and eating appetizers. Only one or two people stopped to actually WATCH us....but we did a real nice job, probably better than we did at our two festival competitions. We stole some expensive water on our way out.

Heh, we're losing all our good trombone players, so I volunteered to play bass trombone with my nose while, of course, simultaneously rocking out on the tenor sax. Of course, we've got to work out the whole slide issue......
But anyway, if I could play anything in jazz band besides tenor or bari sax, I'd play bass trombone. Pedal notes galore.

^Yah, basically, and my baritone playing has given me good tone and enough volume in the low register to make a difference. Also, get a valved one, or just have some freshman work the slide
