Ours (the top one) has gigs about every 2 weeks. They're pretty popular. In fact, they're at a competition now in Addison, TX. (right by Dallas, home of UNT)

Dude, I love how with jazz band, whenever you play ANYWHERE, competition, festival, or yard sale, you refer to it as a gig. You can't really do that for concert band. And how many concert bands do you see playing at yard sales?.....(well, unless they're community bands, but that's different).

well to be honest gig implies being paid, but that would turn EVERYTHING that the top band doesa into a mere performance- though due to the generous donations of local businesses and the hard work of 1 senior trumpet player they were able to go for free.

Another performance, this time at a university festival. We got best rhythm section and best trombone section, but lost best sax section to this band with two sax players in All State Jazz. Pretty awesome, though. There was this guy who gave an award to every soloist. He couldn't pronounce anyone's name right, and more than once he'd announce the wrong person. We also got to watch the Navy Commodores band. Wow. Those guys are my heroes....... Now we're done with festivals for the year

Yay! My would-be rocker friend, who's an awesome guy who really loves the band and the bass, got the open bass spot in the jazz band and the marching band! It is going to kick ass having him!

Man, I really want my jazz band to play Count Bubba's Revenge next year. I've been listening to the Gordon Goodwin recording. What a fun song.

Well... It looks like I won't be in jazz next year. I've decided to take AP theory because I need another AP credit to boost my GPA. I also need another year to learn sax so that I can be in the top band- the 2nd band is doing little more than holding me back.

Is there anyone on this forum who studies primarily jazz? I get this itchy annoying feeling inside whenever I play classical music on the saxophone.......so I mostly play jazz and practice improvising. Plus, in band, tenor saxes almost never get good parts, so while I am still enjoy being in wind ensemble, I don't play much classical music unless my lesson teacher tells me to.

I just joined the jazz band at my school this year! I'm pretty good at improvising on the C scale but I need to practice the Bb. We haven't gotten very far yet since it only started 2 weeks ago. But so far, we've gotten these songs: C Jam Blues Blues by Five Chicken Shack (pretty much our jazz band's anthem) and today we did Watermelon Man Our jazz band has 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 tubas, a baritone, 2 alto saxes, a tenor sax, an oboe, a flute, a piano, 3 guitars, a bass guitar and a drummer. It's a pretty big group.

^And unusual, thought not in a bad way. Our band instrumentation changes. Freshman year top ensemble had 6 trumpets, 4 bones, 4 altos, 2 tenors, 2 baris (me!), a piano, 2 drummers, a guitar, and a bass. Last year we went old-style and had 4 trumpets, 4 bones (3 when our bass bone dropped), 2 altos, 2 tenors, one bari (me!), 2 drummers, a piano, a guitar, and a bass.
For our third director in as many years... who knows? He says there isn't enough interest for 2 bands, which we always have, but it would be too big for one band. I don't want one jazz band. EVen if I don't make the top ensemble, I still want there to be the competitivie ensemble and the, well, not competitive one. I don't want a huge band where you go to contests and they have to drag out extra chairs for you.
We find out audition results this week... I'll post whether I make top, bottom, or neither.

Our jazz band is pretty pah this year... no one signed up so basically the only ones not in the tb are those who can't play. I'm kind of glad I took a year off for AP theory. Considering I have yet to learn saxophone and Mr. G is pretty doggone adverse to having a clarinet who can't double in the top band... would I have been with the top band or stuck with the folks who can't play much less rip out a hot solo like I enjoy doing?

Ripping out hot solos = my life dream. heh heh. I am the LOUD saxophone who gets yelled at if I play anything louder than my interpretation of mezzo piano.
