^ saxplayer12- about that solo, haha BD's like, "hmm, look an open solo" and immediately me and the euph scream NOT IT and put our fingers on our noses (nose game, fyi) Nobody likes solos in our band, even the trumpet 1 tries to give them to the trumpet 2, XD That's too bad about your songs. Well, it does mean a concert sooner, then mew music! Right?

NOSE GAME!!! lol!!! I love nose game. Anyways... Yeah, as stated earlier, schools seem to hate the music department in general. At our middle school, the AP was/is trying to get rid of s/e!!! He thinks that the money going toward entering students into s/e should be going towards the stupid sports programs!!! I reaaaaaally despise that guy. He hates everyone that's not a jock, music ppl in particular!!! Also, I LOVE clarinet in jazz IF IF IF IF IF it is done correctly!!!! The MS jazz band allows flutes and claris since MS bandies usually only play their instrument, and at their last concert, this clari did a solo and ............ it was bad, to put it nicely. The MS doesn't have a very, uhmmmm...mature clarinet section.... uh, yea, it was bad. I about cried and died in my seat... Grrr...we didn't rehearse in Jazz Band Friday cuz we got to load the vans with the steel drums, FUN.... uh, no.

*gasp* I hate when people cut fro Music to Sports!!! And I am so tired of the clarys in my concert section, they're all juniors I'm the only freshman, And they don't even know how to tungue, they don't care, and they're always asking ME, a freshman!, musical questions. Our jazz clarinets don't really play that much/well, to be nice.

^I am soo jealous!!! Have fun with that solo! We got this song called Sonny's Place. What's weird is that there is a twelve bar blues section that appears to be open for solos, but does not say "solo" in my part. All the chord changes are in my part, which is rare for Tenor 2. I'm assuming that everyone in the sax section has this. But I bet it says "solo" on the alto and tenor 1 parts. No one give solos to a Tenor 2. There are technical reasons why lead altos, 1st tenors, 2nd trumpets, etc. usually have the solos, and it has to do with the standard set up of a jazz band. If you'll notice, usually the people with the solo parts are seated closer to the rhythm section to coordinate tempo accuracy. I have a lovely book that is essentially "how to teach jazz band" with jazz band set up diagrams and everything, and I can share more with you once I get back to school so I can read over it. Whoa that's interesting! I've always wondered why 2nd trumpets get so many more solos than firsts. Weird.

Which is fine because I love making up my own music

^ I really stink at solos, because I'm new to bari, and this is my first year of jazz anyway. Therefore, I probably wouldn't get a solo anyway. Fine by me!! Good luck with all your solos, as well. =D

Thanks. You just have to be confident! Once you get good at them they're really fun.

You're a jazz bari? Just go, go die. Why can you be a jazz bari, but I can't?
Answer: I read treble clef, suck at improv, and can't hit the right partials. And my BD is going for a traditional jazz band with 2 altos, 1 tenor, 1 bari sax, 2 trumpets, et cetera. I think he's even going to kick out his one flute he has in there.
Of course, he also let in his little babooshka (our DM), a clarinetist who switched to alto, over a junior and two freshmen who are all three orders of magnitude better, so his selection is, well, flawed. Nothing against him, tho, and I can almost see his justification.

^ That sucks! I don't like your BD already. Mine has to let everyone is, we're such a small school. He gets really annoyed at me a lot though *whistles innocently* Biased BDs are bad. My BD tends to give good music/parts to these 3 seniors that flirt with him all the time. >.< He's new to the 'teacher not student thing'. He just started 3 years ago. Stooooopid. What other instruments do all you guys play? I play clary and bari, duh, and I *try* to play flute in the stands during marching band. And fail miserably.

^^Wow our band director is going on thirty years at our school and is about the most unbiased person I have ever met. I'm kind of glad.
I play alto sax (obviously) and also piano but not for band.

^Haha, good for you =) I could never play piano. I'm waay too uncoordinated. I can play one hand, 5 fingers, but not both. Makes you wonder how I play bari and/or clary, eh? XD Does anyone know anywhere I could get a recording of Flight of the Foo Bird? I tried JWPepper.com (where the music came from), but it wouldn't work on my computer. >.<

^ We're playing: Two Seconds to Midnight Gentle Rain Nightwalk Jazz Me Blues Livin Larger than Life A Time for Love La Fiesta
Some songs we started this year in January, some songs the band has played in the past two years so that most people know how they go. It's just a playing gig, not a competition, so we can do that.

^My jazz band just has concerts at the school. And wow, you have a lot of songs! You only started in Janury? That's sort of late. I got my music in Decamber, practices started after New Years.
