^I am soo jealous!!! Have fun with that solo! We got this song called Sonny's Place. What's weird is that there is a twelve bar blues section that appears to be open for solos, but does not say "solo" in my part. All the chord changes are in my part, which is rare for Tenor 2. I'm assuming that everyone in the sax section has this. But I bet it says "solo" on the alto and tenor 1 parts. No one give solos to a Tenor 2.

I know!!! That drove me nuts in the tenor 2 part! Pieces would have all the keys and stuff, but no solo!! They ARE all in the 1st parts... I've heard of that song somewhere before, like, just very very recently, like, dejavu resently!!! That's weird. I've gotta find out where the heck I've heard it before now!!

Ah, I loved jazz band! I learned tenor sax my sophomore year, played second tenor my junior and first senior year, and then moved up to first tenor and section leader my second senior year. I had a blast. Most of my favorite band memories are from jazz band - we were our own little cult within a cult. Heck, I'm dating my boyfriend because of a jazz band trip. Jazz band is awesomely awesome.

In most of our songs, unless there is a written solo specifically for a particular part, our band director is pretty cool about letting anyone who wants to do solos.

My school must dislike our jazz band. Last year we were performing as part as some random music concert thing and we were the last act on, and the other acts before us had taken up nearly twice their alloted time. We were supposed to have time to play four of our songs. Well, school was to end at 2:30 and it was 2:25, so everyone had to get out to catch their buses. And you know how they totally can't hold them even THREE minutes for EVERYBODY. We played one song and then played another as everybody walked out on us. It was the most depressing concert....

I play Bb clarinet in the 2nd jazz band. I'm in the top concert band. I can sightread our music. But the previous director poisoned our director's mind against clarinets in the top jazz band, so I'm going to learn sax.

^^ School's tend to hate all instrumental music stuff in general. Especially ours. But if the other acts took longer than they were supposed to, then they probably would not have gotten up and left had you been on time. So it probably wasn't because they hated you. ^ Clarinets sound awesome if played correctly in jazz

Yes. Clarinets sound good when played CORRECTLY. That is key. (Haha, key, haha)
Anyone listen to Chuck Mangione? (he's a super awesome flugel player)

Ha! My school's small, we have 1 Jazz band with like 11 people, and 1 concert band with like 30. Everyone gets in, even if they don't play. At all. >.< Jazz band, we're playing The Groove Factor (gaah! hard!) Stormy Weather (niice but slow) Flight of the Foo Birds (Amazing!! anyone ever played that?) Don't Get Around Much Anymore (you don't want to know all the jokes and insults we have whenever our BD announces that song XD)
Claris in jazz band is NOT fair! So, I start learning Bari in october so I can join Jazz band, then in February BD decides that clarinets can be in Jazz band from now on! They never were before...yeah anyway, done ranting. lol.

^ We only had clarinets if the song called for it. Our BD was pretty strict about having a "standard" jazz band. Luckily, that ends up meaning that almost everyone can double, which is rather useful. I think that now the middle school has started insisting on no clarinets, as well. I know they used to allow clarinets (my boyfriend played clarinet in jazz band when he went there), but I just saw them perform last week and there weren't any clarinets that I remember. And my cousin plays clarinet in the band there and has been talking about learning saxophone to get into jazz band. It would make sense because I know the new middle school director has been coordinating with the high school director in terms of curriculum and such.

We have clarinets too, when we need them... Mr. G says I'm it if they ever need a clari for JB.

^ Yeah, probably. It has that odd seven 8th notes thing for saxes a few cues in, like a, aflat, a, c, csharp, c, g, or something. Eww... It's so sad though because I'm just learning bari this year and the only bari player last year was a senior, so now I'm all alone trying to play these random parts that are sometimes with brass, sometimes sax, and sometimes a measure with low brass just for fun >.< Our concert is an a month or so!! GAAH!! Not ready at all!

I just found out that the guy teaching the History of Jazz class I'm going to take next quarter is the same guy that directs the jazz band for the college. How convienent. Then I can talk to him and ask him what I should know and how to audition for jazz band so I can be in it in the fall. I'm hoping the fact that I can double on flute and am learning clarinet will work in my favor. And I'm taking an improv class next quarter, too. I really want to get good at it on flute, because jazz flute is awesome. And then maybe I can talk some people into going with me to Lionel Hampton in February and we could do a combo or something. But that's looking waaaay ahead, lol.

claribarielli - Yeah I think that's it. I liked it because it was in a non-typical minor key and it sounded pretty cool. I played a solo in that song and it was fun. I'm kinda disappointed because all the songs we're playing now aren't really fun and are WAY too easy.
