Thats tough, because most underclassmen can't expect to get in. Ours is more spread out, I think with 6 seniors and 6 juniors and the rest sophomores. Most of the second band is sophomores and freshmen.

Ok, I just got back from concert and it was awesome, Jazz II played as good as than Jazz I in my opinion (except for the one soloist who is an awesome prodigy), and I rocked my solos as well as other people. Just really on a happy spree right now.

Congrats! I know that happy spree well.........Jazz band makes me five times as hyper afterwards than concert band. Our first gig isn't until March 18, and then we've got about a gig or festival a week until mid April.

Ok, so our top jazz band is playing Sing, Sing, Sing for a local music festival, and it's almost an exact replica of the version by Benny Goodman. I listened to them play it, and it's hard but absolutely amazing.
And what's cool is that a band director of a nearby school, who's friends with my director, is going to be on drums. He learned from Buddy Rich, and has a drum set autographed by him.

I love Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing!!!! But does the version you play include a clarinet solo? If so, tell the clarinet player not to go for the high notes. Benny Goodman was smart, he knew not to go for the high notes.

No, it's just an alto sax player instead. It's got a really long drum solo though!

Ever heard of a song called Black Orpheus? It's awesome and extremely hard...but we sucked at it, so we won't be playing it for competitions But we're playing Spain again

Dude, we're totally owning this thread On a random note, have you ever wished that saxes would get to sit in the back of the jazz band, where the trumpets are? I don't think its fair that trumpets get to stand in the back so far away from the director and have random trumpet parties while we saxes sit in the front under constant scrutiny of the director? I don't mind it as much during school jazz band, but million hour long All-State/District rehearsals would be more fun if saxes could have sax parties in the back row....like we do in concert band. I don't know.....my trumpet friend and I were discussing this.

I've thought about that a few times. I guess it does have its benefits, but sax is an instrument where you can't be heard as well from the back. Besides, (at least in our band) the trumpets aren't really so far away that they can have their own parties. However, in concert band we always screw around and play other people's parts. Do you prefer playing loud, big band music of the 1930s or more modern latin-southwest music? Because we're playing some lots of slow latin stuff. It's good, but I would much rather play loud and fast stuff.

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE Sing, Sing, Sing!!!!!! I LOVE Benny Goodman!!!!! Ack!!! And I loooooooooooooove Jazz Band!!! I'm also the only freshy in my school's jazz band. I'm on tenor 2 as well because the other tenor is an amazing senior, teehee. I'm not a very good tenor sax player though!! I've got a lot of room for improvement. I tend to have troubles getting the notes to come out as notes, not light little squeaks, occationally, and sometimes I'll start doing clarinet fingerings instead, hehe. Oops... It's prolly my embouchure or something. I've improved a lot though since I started playing sax last year. I love Benny Goodman!!! Lol.

^yea, but our school isn't really big on our music program. My bd was pretty desperate for saxes. Only three of the saxes in our jazz band actually play saxophone in band (1 of ea. sax), but they aren't in rehearsals with us ever because they're schedules are too busy to actually be in the class, so they have maybe 3 rehearsals w/ us before every performance. The rest of our saxes consist of: 1 bsn>alto, oboe>alto, flute>alto, clari>alto, clari>tenor(me). Even our brass section has a lot of "mixed-breeds" lol, same goes for the rhythm. We have a lot of fun in jazz cuz it's the last class of the day, and our bd is so tired by then, so we have a lot of free class periods in which we play Egyptian Rat-Slap (best card game eva), unload the fundraiser truck (in negative degree weather, NOT fun!) which includes sorting the boxes in abc order, and annoying the other bd, hehe!

Good to see lots of freshman in jazz, that's awesome! I haven't played Birdland but I love that song too. Since I'm in the second band we don't get to play the really famous and awesome songs

We don't play any really awesome songs either cuz of the small music dept. Good news though--my bd moved me up to 1st tenor today!!! Now I get to do solos...as soon as I find where the 1st tenor folder disapeared to...... The coolest song currently in our folder is Smooth by Santana. I love that song, and it's got a big tenor feature in it!
