this may sound weird, but when your sad or angry do you pick up your insturment and play to make you feel better? i know i do. i play when im sad, angry or even bored. i get really good practice time out of it too. its so easy sometimes to just play off raw emotion. i was just wondering who else is like this.

I do. When I get upset, I go to my flute, rifle or sabre for help. It calms me down. Raw emotion is best channeled through practice as well for me. It's my therapy in a sense, because sometimes nothing else will work. Besides, I lavish love on my instrument and guard equipment, and it pays me back by providing comfort.

Summer is excellent for boredom practice. My trombone or baritone is always somewhere in my house, or occasionally my sax if I ever decide to bring it home. I've sat in a chair for hours and just played trombone - it's fun.

I can say I never pick up my horn when I am angry or frustrated...it tends to get conveyed in my playing...and my sound suffers from all the anger...I can definatly coment on the emotion I was asked to play at my Great Grandmothers funeral with a trio...we did amazing grace. I can say every bit of sorrow I felt was conveyed to the people in the church. Playing after that also helped me to deal with the loss as well.

For bordeom, yes, practicing helps me. When I'm sad, I don't want to do anything. But, when it comes to anger, it's best that I don't touch anything of any value. If I do, it's extremly likely that it will get thrown across the room. I throw things when I'm mad. There have been lots of times, when I've been mad, or just frustrated while practicing and I had to put my flute down before I broke it.

I really should, but ussually i prefer to let my emotion be itself.
It does relax and comfort me when i play.

If I play when I'm angry or sad I'll play soprano sax or bassoon, because I'm most confident on alto sax and working to improve on my other two instruments helps me get my mind off what's going on at the time. Other times I just go for a walk or sit on the porch or something, where people won't disturb me until I'm in a better frame of mind.

I do when I'm sad or something. If I'm mad, then I play much better than I usually do...on technical things, anyways. I don't know why. I just seem to get my mind off of whatever I'm really thinking about when I'm mad, and I just play the crap out of technical passages. It's pretty cool, I guess. I'm just totally focused on the technical aspect of playing, and playing musically. I play muscially all of the time, but I play firey things better when I'm mad, and even a ballad and a more solem music. It really all just depends.

Yeah one time my BD came in during lunch and got mad because I hadn't gone to lunch ("You need to eat, your not eating enough") and then he asked me why I was playing the piano (I don't normally play at school) when I told him it was because I was upset and it was soothing he suddenly ceased to be mad and said something about not be able to count the number of times he'd just had to turn out the lights and play piano all night (and ignore his wife's "you need to sleep, you can't go to work tomorrow if you don't sleep")

Definitly. I'm a generally very happy person, but when I do get upset, playing my instruments is very helpful. It's also got the added advantage of if they can hear I'm practicing in my room, people won't bother me till I'm done, unless the phone rings for me or something.

YES! If I'm upset about something, I'll grab my flute and play something that will calm me down. Actually, just playing calms me...anything band-related really. Music is a great outlet...

Sometimes when I play the flute, it makes things worse because the guilt of not practicing enough just makes me even more depressed, but I found if I bang out a song on the piano, it gets rid of my bad feelings.
