This is just for fun. What are your methods that you've found efficient in keeping those freshmen under control during marching band? We have found ganging up on them and flyswatters to be rather effective.

I had a more serious thread entitled freshmen but this seems more interesting.
We yell a lot.

We actually have a trumpet rookie beating stick. We considered adding nails but the stick itself works just fine. Believe me, I know.. That thing hurts like a beast.

I was about the only senior in our band that attempted to make friends with the freshmen. It worked quite nicely too btw. I never had an issue with either of the 2 in the trumpet section.
There was one who thought he was better than everyone else....but I quickly put him into his place seeing as he met me in the middle of my "OMG I HAVE TO LEARN THE CARNIVAL OF VENICE" phase and I was beasting on the 32nd notes. He stopped being so thingyy after that.
Thingyy doesn't have the same effect as the non-vulgar word I had in its place. You know what I'm talking about...overly confident, arrogant, stuck up. Starts with a C

Lol... "OMG I HAVE TO LEARN THE CARNIVAL OF VENICE" phase.... I went through that this year for solo and ensemble (NEVER AGAIN D: even though I'm paying Carmen Fantaise Brilliante next year >< )
ANYWAYS
We tend to kill our freshmen with kindness... like seriously. Everyone is so trained to be like "OMG MUST BE NICE TO FRESHMEN AND MAKE THEM STAY OR WE DIE" kinda thing... It scares some freshmen out of marching. Other's stick around and either embrace the kindness or stay scarred forever ready to scar the freshmen after them.

We lock people in band lockers. We let 'em out after 2 minutes and they don't really care.

My band? Most of us were either made fun of or ignored. There were only 5 of us, so for the most part we behaved. But seriously? Be nice to the freshmen who don't know anyone when they come to band camp. They're probably scared of you because they're surrounded by older kids they don't know. And for heavens sake, set GOOD EXAMPLES for them. If you show your not being serious during practice, they will get very confused.
As for the annoying freshmen who come in huge groups of other freshmen friends, who act as if they're upperclassmen......THEY are the ones to throw on top of buildings. Don't let them get away with anything.

I never had that much problem with Freshmen when I was in band. As a future teacher, I plan on establishing authority roles (band president and such). Past that, I would expect the freshmen to fall in line with the rest of the band by the rest of the band's good behavior. Role modeling is the best teacher. I would never condone hazing to make freshmen fall in line band. After all, everyone was once a freshman.

^Hazing is so much more fun though...
We theoretically give push-ups, but nobody does them.

It was just if you wouldn't play your part in the sectional. At the beginning the section leader scared us so much no one spoke out of line about anything.

One rather...funny thing we do with all brass. If you have ever had a mellophone player play with his bell to your bare stomach, it feels funny. If you have a mellophone player play with his bell to your stomach for 45min, it REALLY starts to hurt. Thats how we take care of 'dem freshies in the brass.

We're actually a little too kind. And it's no wonder....we have a voluntary organization and sometimes it's a bit small. Often times we're like "OMG FRESHMEN! WE LOVE YOU!" and they freak out. Plus, the PDA between veterans (often between members of the same sex who are quite straight) freaks them out. But the cool ones still stay. And then there's the brilliant freshmen that put their heads in tubas and have somebody play the thing....but that's their own doing! I swear!

WE put our elbow in instruments, for fun, or put two trombones' bells together (if you play a woodwind, don't go near that, as it is often really off key and terrible sounding, especially at different slide positions.
