^Agreed. they will attach themselves to you and your seniority, and yeah that's not always good. Make sure they know they're freshmen. Amen. I had to break a freshman friend of mine the other day. He thought he could choose what practice room to use despite the fact that I, a junior, was in the room before him. I didn't want to pull seniority, because I hate it, but I was there first. It was hard to put him in his place without hurting his feelings, but it all worked out. Now I feel bad, though, because today the poor kid was practicing in the hall with his music balanced on a doorknob.

Ah i'm finding that needs done with my section.I have a section of only freshmen on one habd i want to befriend them because they need that and i dont want them to feel picked on but on the other they are starting to not respect my authority as much.friday night at our first game a girl refused to put on the pair of black socks i handed her.She was wearing too short socks and the ones i handed her were brand new.In the end i pulled her aside and talked with her about it,i told her i didnt want to embarris her but if she did that again i might not have the time to pull her aside and would do it publicly if needed, she needs to respect that i have a pupose to what i do and need it done

How about control methods for Freshmen who are hyper or who just mouth off to upperclassmen a lot and don't know when to stop... Anyone got advice for that?

^^For hyperness, just remark about how stupid freshmen are loudly until they get the hint.
As for mouthing off, do roughly the same thing, only to their face. Instead of "you are a freshman, so shut up" try, "You people wonder why we hate freshmen". Nobody wants to feel inferior, and if you can emphasize that they are acting like freshmen, they may stop.

We make them run suicides. They go from the 50 to the endzone. That is if its a large group of them. Usually they just run laps.

If you don't understand now, you will understand when you are no longer a freshman.
There is a hierarchy. Youngest are at the bottom, oldest at the top. Older kids know more, have suffered more, and no longer do dumb stuff because they didn't know (they still do dumb stuff, they just do it on purpose now because they know better.) Freshman say and do dumb stuff because they don't know they are being dumb.
In a nutshell, the younger you are, the more dumb things you will do by accident and the less you will get away with doing them.

We had a freshman sax who would not stop playing when he wasn't supposed to. So we took an empty spray bottle and sprayed him everytime he played at the wrong times. He learned fast.

welp, i just felt like giving a random bit of... not exactly advice, but a look into freshman thought process (at least in my band) anyways. i'm a freshman right now, and honestly, i'm just terrified, and what i think would be really great would be just telling me what to do. our bd pretty much just kinda pushes you into it, a crash course kind of thing, and so if the upperclassmen would just tell us what to do, most of the time we'll do it because we're confused and terrified.
