Yeah, our band has this bad problem with alienating and offing freshmen... it's annoying

We've had a history with locking people in bass drum cases and dropping them off the loading docks...they did that to the superintendent's twin boys their freshman year...the drumline captain was suspended for a month for that one I think....Number one rule when the twins were there..DON'T mess with the Superintendent's kids...

[glow=red,2,300]ahhh there are so many methods one could use.[/glow] Our BD uses a squirt bottle and duct-tape. It differs section to section depending on your section leader. In CG we do push-ups for various offenses and if we say can't were have to eat a scrap of paper with "can't"[glow=red,2,300][/glow] written on it my friend and I have also came up with many other ideas during Comm. Arts.

WE have a problem with people wearing tank tops or colored t-shirts under theyr uniform-they hav to be wight so it dosent bleed onto the uniforms(14 years old) and have some cloth between your armpits and the uniform. So anyone caught wearing tanks or color has to stand up in front of the band and sing a funk related song ie. we need the funk, funkytown, play that funky music ect.

we don't have any but we should... they get "attatched" to upperclassman and think they can get away with it because an upperclassman thinks its cool when the rest of us dont...

Water guns are used frequently at band camp where i go. it's not really a form of punishement because as we all know band camp gets hotter all the time. so when people start messing up on purpose SLs threaten to not spray them before lunch. =)

My section started with a set of expectations that they are held to.Although they hated it in the beginning they're used to it now.I refuse to give push-ups they screw up flute players shoulders and running kills knees instead they have to stay at attention for a long time or play in front of the section or anything else creative i can think of.I also put in fun stuff, because i refuse to have sectionals where nothing gets done so i hold social events and give rewards. One night for practice we had a PJ pant competition we got the field staff to judge the coolest pair of Pj's then that person got released with the senors instead of the freshmen.Or after a really hot practice i had my mom bring us ice cream and we had Sundays. Most of the time freshmen don't need controlling they just have to know that they WILL listen to u and ur authority is absolute. Then everything goes fine

My preferred method:
Befriending them.
I make friends with all the underclassmen marching clarinets. It's worked fantastically so far. They respect you for reaching out a hand to them in their rookie year. I started using that method because when I was a rookie, my section leader totally took me under her wing. She looked out for me, gave me advice, became my friend, my advocate, like my older sister. So I've done that with a now-sophomore clarinet, and all the flutes say that she's like a miniature version of me. She's my buddy, and I like to think that I made her marching experience better.
Plus, it gives you friends in your own section. I didn't have any current friends who marched clarinet, so I made them. I also apply this outside of my section. I've made friends with underclassmen in virtually every section, sophomores and freshmen alike.

^ I do that to as much as possible.I'm just so different from my section and they already have a group of friends. My sectionleader my freshie year did the same thing she taught me how to march, how to roll my polo shirt and how to sneak food in uni .Today even though she is in colorado i still call her whenever the BD is stressing me out. I really try to befriend the freshmen but i cant relate to most of them.

^Agreed. they will attach themselves to you and your seniority, and yeah that's not always good. Make sure they know they're freshmen.
