I'm the leader of the Hornline during the summer, and on Rifle during the winter, so I have experience with both. In my particular case, I don't find our guard practices nearly as hard as my band practices, but in fairness we haven't actually started competing yet either. Also, it's an entirely different kind of work, too. I also play soccer and run track, and compared with those, I don't find band or guard as rapidly exhausting physically, but definitely a lot more challenging mentally and emotionally. They're very hard to compare, because they're so different.

I don't know why so many people don't like guard. There was a girl I knew that told me my activity is pointless. Can you believe it? I work so hard, and she thinks she can get off saying it's all in vain...I don't talk to her anymore.

I recall an article in our newspaper stating how under-appreciated we are. I think they felt too much pity for us.
Sure we don't have a place to practice 8o% of the time. Sure we carry the gigantic floor for winter season halfway across a building, but still, there are other extra-curriculars who don't get credit too.
Our captain says just to ignore those kinds of people because there really isn't much a bunch of girls can do on their own.

I was reading the Hill Country News once, and they had an article talking about ... I guess it was my band. and then there was the "LISD bands practising too much?" article. That made me laugh. I don't remember how much else we've been in the paper.

we're never in the paper =\ granted, the local paper seems to favor our rival school, and barely reports anything good having to do with us.

My band was featured in a big color article in the Wisconsin State Journal this last summer, talking about the insane hours we put in day-to-day, etc. It was pretty cool.

wow. that is pretty cool. we have a girl on the newspaper staff at our school who LOVES the guard so she wants to do a whole spread on how hard it really is and all we haveto do to get the show put together. it should be really good.

My article about the band headlined... I have made the same sort of cracks as your baritone friend did, but I'm always joking, and nobody takes me seriously anyway

Apparently my school's guard is full of lesbians? Hmm... must have missed that in my grand search to find a girlfriend. If I had known that, I could have found a girlfriend a LOT earlier in high school.
It makes me so mad that people would say that, even if they are joking. Because out of our entire group of 18, only two of us have "homosexual tendencies" and we're dating each other. At first it was just a band joke, (oh, colorguard, that's where all the band lesbians go), but now it's circulating around the school, and my guard catches such crap for it. These people are my sisters, and they don't deserve it whether it's true or not.

I marched picc this year and we were at band camp sitting down in the shade drinking water after getting drill for an hour and this girl says "Its not fair! Guard is in an air conditioned gym ((our practice space is a gym that at band camp is NOT air conditioned and smells like something bad)), sitting, drinking water, and having a good time while we're out here doing work." I almost killed her I was screaming so loud...

For our school we have an air conditioned gym...But what they get in airconditionedness they lose in the awful headaches the reverb in the gym causes, so it works out in the end.
Try not to be so quick to hate on the band ,they're generally the greatest defenders of the gaurd and help a lot with recruiting.

we're never in the paper =\ granted, the local paper seems to favor our rival school, and barely reports anything good having to do with us. Same with my school. We're known as the poor kid school. The rich kid school across town, which isn't even too far away either, gets all the attention from the paper. we just get bad press from the paper.
