everytime I wore my letterman last year, people were like "what did you letter in?? guard doesn't count." oh boy, did I explode. every time. people started using it against me lol...and from there it turned into a guard being sport or arts argument.
i still say its a sport of the arts. =D

A few years back, my old captain was out in the hall working on her solo. A couple of basketball players walk by, and thinking we're the dance team, they look into the gym. One turns to the other and says "It's just the fat chicks that dance"
LOL.
It makes it even funnier now that we don't have and people that are remotely close to being large.

We get some people who think guard is just a piece of cake, but... we do get a lot of respect from the school because we are very good. and because our school is pretty much a crowd of marching band groupies.
on on the weight thing... I kinda like me. Personally, I think I have just the right build for weapon, but I don't look it. *shrugs*

wait, lemme make sure I'm understanding this correctly. Are you complaining about not weighing enough? As odd as it sounds, yes. I had to go to a neurologist because I was having pains due to nerves. The neurologist said that I am too underweight which causes the nerves to (if I remember correctly) be strained. I can't gain weight though, no matter how much I eat. I've been asked by a lot of people if I'm anorexic or whatnot, but no. I'm not. I love food too much to be anorexic, and I hate throwing up too much to be bulemic...plus, I can't afford to lose weight. I know it sounds weird. Honestly, I do.

That sounds like a girl in my guard. She eats so much, and loses weight.

Pahhh. The other day I got into a very cliche argument (in Debate class nonetheless) with a football player about band not being nearly as hard as..well anything. My teacher actually brought it up, about how she had more respect for the band kids than sports teams because we're up every morning practicing before school, we practice in extreme heat AND cold, and she just likes us more. He was all, "meh you don't have to run around or wear hot heavy pads, or have Mr Krier [our sadistic crazy-mean coach] yelling at you". And i was like, "well you don't have to carry a forty pund drum, almost pass out from doing it just one more time, endure the hot/cold, and you'd never know how difficult it is to simply stand at attention for 5 minutes. And you don't have [DM] having a bad day in front of your face with a whistle or gock block."
Seriously, I had forgotten how exhausting band camp was. I forgot how physically AND mentally worn out I got. You have to think so much, and memorize and GAH. Hate him.
Also, once I was looking at a picture of a competition, you could see part of the crowd in the stands, and another stupid football player went "Wow, a lot of people go to those."

Yeh, my brothers a football player and he used to tell me that we definately dont work as hard as they do all the time. But this year our once fantastic football team won only three games. So when our band went to States again this year and he said something bad about us i just reminded him that we went to States and they didnt

We too have a guard girl who eats nothign but junk, eats all the time, and never gains any weight. She's constantly asked if she's anorexic...apparently by people who don't know her at all, since this girl never STOPS eating... But yeah, I can see how being underweight would be just as much of a problem. I have the build of a martial artist--short, a little overweight because of muscle, but not skinny nor fat. Kind of in the middle. Yeah, the rifle body... The main issue my school has with this comes from within the band. They think we don't do anything in our sectionals because we joke around with each other all the time...but we actually get a lot of work done. They don't understand how hard it is to spin a flag. It's not easy to do the work while marching, much less have it together. That, and we're waving around big shiny things that say HEY! LOOK AT ME!, so it's really obvious when we mess up. Despite this, one of my friends told me that I should just stop my drill entirely because the baritones are more important than the guard and the band needs them more. Oh man. That was NOT a happy time in band...

oh man, that "friend" would be severely bruised by the end of that day. not only by me, but by the rest of guard, and lots of the band. honestly, how dumb.
