^ yeah, you should read my post back in the "I need a hug" room. here's another hug. the good news is of course that it will make you a better flute player, even while you're still awesome as you are. you can fix the stuff you did wrong, and you'll be uber sweet. ;D

Solo Ensemble for our region is day after tomorrow. I've got:
Piano Solo: Presto (Toccata) from Sonata in D Major, by Pietro Domenico Paradisi Sax Trio: Fugue for Three Saxophones, by...um, some guy. Brown? Bari Solo: Canzona, by Carl Frangkiser
Last year I did a piano solo and an alto solo, and got a 1- and a 1.
We got on a 1-5 scale. 1 being superior and 5 being "why did you come?" aka BAD.

B-flat Clarinet Solo class B: I I don't get it. I thought I screwed this up. I got all the parts I was really worried about right, but the stuff I didn't worry about as much, wasn't that great. And for some reason, the judge wasn't looking at me very happy. All the other people who played in her room she smiled at.
Misc. Woodwind Trio class C (I was on bassoon): I I can believe this. This was only class C, and I was playing a bass instrument (given, I've only been playing for 3 months), and it just seemed to go well enough.

YMEA Solo Ensemble results are in! (uh, more or less. The eval sheets kind of accidentally took a detour to Selah, despite the fact S&E was held HERE.)
Piano solo: II Sax Trio: I- Bari solo: I have no idea, but FIRST ALTERNATE for State. The other EHS bari player made State. I may have to break his fingers.

I don't remember everything I've been in, but here's as good a list as I can come up with: 7th grade: Solo - Aria & Scherzo - I (this was really tough. huge sets of sixteenths at ~100 BPM? the judge was impressed I could even play it, if I remember right ;^^) Ensemble (AATB Sax quartet) - Snow Day - I (original arrangement by our middle school BD, a light fluffy piece) 8th grade: Ensemble (ATB trio) - My Favourite Things - III (original arrangement by our middle school BD, our bari sax player dragged us down a lot though we weren't much better ) 9th grade: Solo - Contempora Suite - II (really nice song, I liked it; had a horrible start on one movement and restarted, the rest was fine) Ensemble (AATB Sax quartet) - something - III (we played well enough on our own, but none of us could really mesh well) This year (10th grade): Solo - Aria - I (3/8 and andante mon na troppo. 16ths, 32nds, triplets, and more! was a fun piece though - the adjudicator thanked me for playing it Ensemble (AAT trio) - Peasant Dance - I (honestly, I was worried about this because one group member kept getting offtempo. However, we did pull it off perfectly for the actual performance)

Hmm... 7th Grade: Clarinet Trio: Three Red Roses, II 8th Grade: Clarinet Solo: Chrysalis, I 9th Grade: Clarinet Trio: Rondo (I think) by Mozart, I 10th Grade: Woodwind Quartet (Two Clarinets, Two Flutes): ..I forget the name.. I think it was like Dance of the Flute or something.. II Clarinet Solo: something by Mozart.. K622 maybe? ..II 11th Grade: Clarinet Trio: Scherzo (by some dude.. ), I Clarinet Solo: Minuet and Allegro (Mozart again I think?), II 12th Grade: Clarinet Trio: Menuet and Allegro, Haydn, I ..and now I am done with Solo & Ensemble

Well, we just went Saturday. 1 is the best, either 4 or 5 is the worst, and 1C means you can go to state.
On my solo, somehow I managed to get a 1. I seriosly don't know how. I skipped entrie measures, didn't hold notes out all tha way and my entrences were bad. Maybe the judge was easy on me, or maybe my tone was just that good. I dunno. I haven't gotten my comment sheet back yet.
Our Woodwind Ensemble got a 1 also. We had thought we were gonna DNA cuz our director lost the score for the judge, but we got that worked out, but it still wasn't great.
I think our school in general did well. We had one DNA, and our lowest scores were 2s, mostly ones though!

AHHH! yey, I did Von Weber's clarinet concertino...class A and I got a 1 on it! its my first one on a solo in 6 years of doing S&E I got a 2 on my oboe solo but it honestly wasn't my fault....long story....
as for ensembles this year, clarinet trio and quartet both 1's o yea we so rock. sax quartet: 1 sax trio: 2 and I'm not even going to talk about the sax sextet...I'm trying to forget I even did that one, or that it existed.....
and if anyone wants to know 1= superior 2=excellent so on.....4 and 5=poor......

Aha. We just had our Solo and Ensemble competition.
Horn Solo- I(Superior)
I think my judge was a little too kind, however. My attacks were miserable. Perhaps it was my charisma? Who knows.
Either way, it was the first and last time i'll be attending a Solo and Ensemble competition. I only regret not seizing the opportunity earlier...

Hey, Kes, I know exactly how you feel. My sophomore year, I got a III on my solo too. My accompanist/the oboe teacher who I really don't like as an oboe teacher made me use my oldest reed, and it dried/closed up on me in the middle of my solo. I had to stop, soak it, and start again. I was practically crying the rest of the day. Luckily, though, my BD had been with me the whole time (like, he went to the warm-up room with me and knew it was my oldest reed), and told me he knew I was better prepared and I'd get a different accompanist the next year. But after that day, I really felt kind of "turned off" and "burnt out" on music. I felt horrible about it, but it went away, luckily. My other years at contest: (5th-8th uses a I-III scale) 5th grade: Flute solo: I+ 6th grade: Flute solo: II Oboe solo: I+ 7th grade: Oboe solo: I or I+, can't remember Oboe duet: same as ^ 8th grade: Oboe solo: same as ^ Oboe duet: same as ^ (I can't remember!!!) (9th-12th uses a I-V scale) 9th grade: Oboe solo: II 10th grade: Oboe solo: III 11th grade: Oboe solo: II 12th grade: Oboe solo: I!!!!! Flute duet: I!!!! ^^that really made my year...or 4 years...lol. Both my mom and BD told me they were happy I finally got my I. My BD gave me a big high-five...I was so excited.

I found out how I made my I. The comment sheet said that I had a good tone, and I knew the rthyms. Also, the judge thanked me for dressing nice. no clue what was up with that!
