Ya know I really believe that if you dress up nice (and don't wear flip flops because old people don't like them) that the judge will already have a good idea formed in their head about how you will sound. Anyways, I wanted to post my results: I'm a freshman and I got a I rating at state! And it wasn't even a I-! All I've ever gotten on my flute solos since 7th grade were I minuses. I did some other stuff at districts that didn't go to state like a flute trio and we got a ...III...! Well our intonation was complety in the crapper from the first note but oh well. I also did a choir solo and got a II but band is better anyway. Sorry I just come barging in here like this cuz im a newbie but I just know im gonna love this place! Band, the Phantom of the Opera and Harry Potter! Hoo Hah!

I've played solos every year since sixth grade and ensembles since seventh. Throughout junior high I got Division I's on all my solos and ensembles on a scale of I to V.
In high school, we're limited to two events per year not including piano solos. Last year's solo was Canon in D and this year was Sonata #3, both getting Div. II's due to my horrible luck with reeds. Last year I played a saxophone trio which got a I at region and a II at state. This year my quintet got a I at region and a III at state. Both people playing alto (including me) dropped their instruments before entering the judging room, which totally destroyed our tuning. It didn't help that we had changed our music the week before and our judge was on some sort of crusade against giving out I's. No one got better than a II from him all day.

Well, I had S&E in late April, but here it goes anyway. I Origionally had... Horn Solo Baritone Solo Horn/ Flute Horn Clarinet Horn/trumpet Horn/Horn Horn/Flute/Clarinet/trumpet Brass Quintet Let's see... Horn/horn was canceled because of a sleepover... Horn/clarinet was canceled the week after, because she didn't feel like it anymore. Brass quintet was canceled Because the trumpet 1 (Aka horn duet) was at sleepover, the other 2 decided they weren't interested after the first practice. Horn/flute got turned into a horn/clarinet/flute trio 2 days before S&E, so I had to write a new part and new score. The the night before, the flute decided she probably wouldn't go, because prom was the same day as S&E. Horn/flute/trumpet/clarinet was canceled, because 1 had to prepare for prom, and one changed her mind after the 1st week.
The horn/clarinet was picked back up when my clarinet cousin agreed to do it 2 days before S&E. So... Horn Solo-I Baritone solo-I horn/clarinet-I horn/trumpet-I
Horn solo was Andromeda Serenade-Betthoven. The only hard part is that it has 16th notes runs about half way through for about 3 bars. Judge said I had Amazing Tone quality.
Baritone Solo was a piece I will post later. I had picked up baritone that week, and he said that setting aside a few missed partials, I was one of the best he heard all day.
Horn/Clarinet was Hungarian Rhapsody. He said we didn't interpret the style exactly right, but that was it; except clarinet missed a Bb.
Horn/trumpet was Ecosaiiase. (sp?) He said it was a very nice job, but that he liked the origional instrumentation before we switched line during the piece.
So, In conclusion, it turned out that it came down to those few people that hung in there to go to S&E. In total, we had 5 people from our school to go.

S&E is painful to talk about. This year was my 1st year competing on sax and for the first time in history I didn't ge ta one (I compete on 2 othe rinstruments) I went totally blank about 10 measures into the song. I didn't even know what note I'd just played, my pianist played about 1 measure for me and told me to start there and I didn't even recognize the melody. I had to get my music from the judge and finish with the music. So I got a 2 the judge's only complaint was intonation wasn't quite right.

Our sax quartet got a 1 at states playing Three Pieces by Vaclav Nelhybyhl... and the piece was as crazy as the spelling of that guys name. I hated the music but hey, if it gets you a 1, you can't really complain. Because we did so well we were asked to play an opening for our state symphony, and THAT was awesome.

Any Virginia-dwellers know if there's a state solo+ensemble thingy? I've never heard of one, now I'm curious.

Bringing it back. So, do you go to Solo and Ensemble competitions? This is the thread to brag about what you got and discuss what the judge said and what you played and all that good stuff. Also, explain your rating system, as all rating systems are different. We go by numbers (one is the best, five is the worst). We have the same rating system. Ours isn't till February, but in the past I've gotten 8th grade counties: Solo-- the music was grade 4, I got a score of 1 Woodwind quintet-- grade 3, score of 1 Flute duet-- grade 4, score of 1 8th grade state: Same grades and scores 9th grade counties: Solo-- grade 5, score of 1 Flute ensemble-- ditto Flute duet-- grade 4, score of 2 gahhhh 9th grade state: Solo-- grade 5, score of 1 Ensemble-- grade 4, score of 1 This year I'm playing another grade 5. I turned down the 6s my teacher suggested because well they were hard. I'm probably going to do another duet and ensemble. Oh snap! How is your solo music graded? The grading system that I'm familiar with is: 1- Junior high, beginning high school, easy 2- High school, more demanding than 1, but still fairly simple 3- College, rhythmically/musically demanding, but not at a professional level 4- Conservatory, more demanding than 3 5- Professional, uses unconventional technique

This year I'm playing a grade 6 sax duet titled Duo with my friend. It's insane, but we're starting to practice now for March so I'm sure we'll be ready.

hmm solo and ensemble. been doing it since sixth grade i guess, although the one that actually counts is high school but oh well. all for bassoon. (basic I, II, III...grading system, by the way- although in middle school my judges gave me I+ often? hmm) i also don't really know what class my solos were for middle school. i know at least for 8th grade my solo was a class I and i think the same for my 7th grade solo. it really didn't count until high school. oh and class I is the highest.
6th grade: solo - I trio - I 7th grade: solo - I+ duet - I 8th grade: solo - I+ duet - I trio (with two flutes) - I quartet - I 9th grade: class I solo - I class I trio - I (also with I's for both at state S&E)
guess that's it for now. =)
