I went to Solo/Ensemble for AHS for the 1st time last year, and I got a 2 on my class C piece b/c of my lack of air support and also my pitch. That is what cost me my 1. I'm going back to it this year with a class B piece and hoping to get a one on it. Anyways, just curious, anyone from Ohio on here that will be in Clearfork on Feb 18th?

hmm ok well I've been doing solo and ensemble since 7th grade and I'm a senior this year.....
7th grade: Clarinet solo-2 8th grade: Clarinet solo-2 Clarinet trio-2 9th grade: Clarinet solo Clarinet choir Saxophone sextet- solo and ensemble was cancelled that year due to snow. 10th grade: Clarinet solo-2 Clarinet quartet-2 Clarinet trio-2 I think Flute Choir-2 (we just plain sucked...) 11th grade: Clarinet solo-2 Bass Clarinet solo-2 Clarinet Quartet-2 Clarinet trio-2 Flute Choir-3 Saxophone Sextet-1 (we soooo kicked butt!) This Year: I'm going to do: Clarinet quartet Clarinet trio Flute choir (hopefully) Saxophone Quartet and maybe sextet Brass Choir (hopefully) Clarinet solo Oboe solo Bass Clarinet solo Saxophone solo (maybe) Flute choir (maybe) I am going all out this year. I want to do it all if I'm allowed. I know I probably won't do good on my solos, mostly because I can never find a piano player to play all of them till like last minute, plus I hate playing by myself......
o yea and our rating system is 1 best 5 worst.

Rating System for Ohio: 1-Superior 2-Excellent 3-Good 4-Fair (I think) 5-Poor 7th grade: (1 ensemble) it was both our bd's first years at these things and so we had a weird ensemble because they didn't know better. We had a bass clarinet, a clarinet (me), and a baritone in our ensemble. Our what is now an assistant bd to the high school arranged us a piece (he's pretty good at arranging) from Pachelbel (god I hope I spelled that right)'s Canon. Rating: 1 8th grade: (1 ensemble) clarinet (me once more), flute, and bass clarinet (the same one as last ensemble). We played an arrangement by our assistant bd again. This time it was Allegro Giocoso by Haydn. Rating: 1 9th grade: (2 ensembles) of course this was my freshman year. I played in two ensembles: Woodwind Choir (I played 2nd part because it was a bit unbalanced with like 4 flutes, 2 clarinets, a bass clarinet, and a bassoon (the player of the bassoon was my section leader). We played 2 pieces: Minuet by Beethoven, and Finale by Mozart, and these were C (easiest) pieces. This was a weird group. The flutes according to the judges were about the worst (they still weren't too bad), he never mentioned clarinet except maybe once (I screwed up a run...but I've become SO much better within a year) but he did say the bass parts were really good. Rating: 2 Clarinet Trio (2nd part) we played a Scherzo by Tuthill. This was a piece from hell to me because: 1. it was an A (hardest) piece 2. I couldn't count worth crap 3. it was weird (I don't deny it grew on me after a while) On third was my section leader who also plays bassoon (she's normally first...and god she's a great musician...she did third because she wanted and she was a senior). On second was myself (all I knew how to play a year ago was clarinet...haha). On first was our drum major who I am actually going out with now (I could never believe this a year ago...life is funny). It had offbeats, which I couldn't count, it was weird, it had rhythms I had never had to deal with before, but this is the piece that later helped me learn to count. I learned to count from marking time while playing this Scherzo, that like most Scherzos is in 3/4. After I learned to count, I gained a little confidence and pride and excelled a little more. Now I'm in jazz band... But I've digressed long enough. There were two A pieces being played by kids in our band: a snare solo and our trio. The solo got a 2. Rating: 1 (that means I was part of the most successful group that year. No solos or ensembles did as well as we did). Maybe I'm a bit too proud? 10th grade (this year): (1 solo, 1 ensemble) The ensemble consists of a clarinet (hah! not me), a flute, and a bassoon (which I play). The piece is a C piece, and is Two German Dances by Mozart. Rating: solo and ensemble isn't for another month My solo is a B (between A and C...) piece I'm playing on clarinet. Actually they're two pieces: Presto, and then Aria by the same guy, Jacques Aubert. I really, really, like these pieces though Aria has an annoying key signature (4 sharps...I can handle no more than 2 or three I swear) and is in 3/8 (which really isn't a big deal since most of the music we are playing in concert band right now is in 6/8). But it does have all this minor stuff going on that I LIKE A LOT. Rating: not for another month.

I would like to take credit of being the bass clarinet in Javelin's ensembles in 7th and 8th grade!! I really like our pieces those years. This year I am the clarinet of the ensemble. I still don't understand why I am playing clarinet and Javelin bassoon because the part is for either bassoon or bass clarinet. But whatever, just something else new to me.

^ I can vouch for her; she was indeed in those ensembles she takes credit for.
He probably has you on clarinet because he wants you to get better at higher parts and he has me on bassoon because he wants me to get better at the whole instrument. Also, maybe a bassoon would be more desirable for the piece? I don't really know. I could ask him and he wouldn't destroy me because, well, that's just how it is.
A startling new possibility has been revealed to me yesterday. An alto saxophonist friend, kio (of TFBC), is in a sax trio for Solo and Ensemble. One of the players is considering quitting the trio, and if she does, I have volunteered to fill in. (It's something I wanted to do originally but never managed to obtain). So I may get to add another to the list.

^Good luck!!! I hope you guys do well!!! I'm sure you will!!!
I'm sorry about my post earlier. I was thinking of Five Bagatelles, AND a Sonata that I might have done...written by Saint- Saens. The second movement to that was the hard one... SO!!! Five Bagatelles is actually really easy for the most part. It's just in 3/2 time. No big deal. the "slower, prettier part" is in 4/4..but I would really like to keep the original tempo (I heard a recording of someone doing that...I really liked it). It's still pretty, and not as fast because it's not straight 8th notes in 3/2 time. And I really want to do the whole thing..but altogether, it's about 14 minutes long. and I don't think we're allowed to go over 10 minutes. And I either do the first movement, or nothing. and If I wanted to do a Sonata, I would have to be able to play all of it, and the judge would just pick out a part that they feel like they want me to play..and they would judge me from there. I want to do all of Five Bagatells because I LOVE the 5th movement. It's really fast..and in the altissimo register quite a bit with trills up to altissimo G. but it's just really fun and exciting..but I can't do the whole thing, so I just have to play that just for fun. But good luck to all of you going to Solo/Ensemble today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have All-Region this coming up Friday and Saturday. The clinic will be fun, I guess.

^ aww. here's a for her! Thanks Duel... it really sucked, being told I got a III. I cried for an hour, and considered not going to Winter Ball. I'm still really upset about it, but I realized a few things: 1. Better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all. After all, most kids don't even TRY to go to S&E. 2. A III is average, if you look at it grade wise. So I'm not bad, but not great. 3. Learn my fingerings. (I only JUST found out Wednesday I finger high D wrong, and it was too late to change it without feeling weird... What REALLY ticks me off is that it JUST got caught, even though I've been playing it the same way for years, and none of the judges in the past caught it... ) 4. My ego has been deflated, which is good, because I think I was starting to become a bit like a certain trumpet player. 5. I'm going to really try hard next year to get a I... my goal is to go to States at least once and get a I or II. So, I'm gonna kinda wallo this weekend and eat a lot, and then Monday I'll go to school, explain my III status, most likely cry a bit for bringing back the pain in front of others, and move on with my life. Seriously, though... my judge must have had a bad lunch. She gave out a III and a II before I went it!
