Music performance ftw! I am not even in collehe yet, not even close...but I have a question that I know someone on here could answer. If you are a music education major, would it be best to minor in a music history or performance on your instrument...what? See, I am going to major in music education...high school director...I am just trying to figure out what would be the best topic to minor in... thanks Where I go to school, you're not allowed to minor in performance, only major. Most people I know majoring in ed don't have a minor. Being a music ed major takes up a lot of time. I feel so bad for the people double majoring in ed and performance. Most of the older people double majoring strongly advise against both. But the ones who do have a minor I think are minoring in psychology though.

Yea...I am just trying to figure out what would be best to take to further my career. It seems like performance would be good but then again psycology would be a key thing too. I dont know...I still have two more years. But thanks for helping. A double major would be tough...I just might do it. lol. I am up for a challenge and that would definitely help out a lot. I guess my bd would be who I want to talk to. Just getting ideas for the future. tahnks again...anymore you can let me know.

Performance is an intense program where you focus on being the best there is at your instrument. It is generally the most selective of tracks that you can take as a music major; most programs require you to do a semester to a year of "provisional" performance, and then you have an actual audition for the performance major, where they will not accept you if you have not made adequate improvement over the course of the year (and they will not allow you to do the "provisional" track if you do not already have well above-average playing skills for your age). So the idea of performance being a "minor" is simply impossible.

Pre Education until end of soph year when i can apply to the school of ed. for History and Gov. Education (Secondary).
way back in middle school i wanted to be a music ed. major (orchestra), but then i figured you had to be pretty talented on your instrument. i'm descent at viola, but after 9 yrs of school orch. and 4 yrs of private lessons, i'm in suzuki 4. it's not like i'm settling for less by doing history though. i really do enjoy it. i'm still gonna do guard in the fall and maybe orchestra in the spring if i have time.

So the idea of performance being a "minor" is simply impossible. It's kinda like that here (I think we're more lax); there are professors here who will except students to their studio as a music major, but not a performance major until they prove that they're good enough. I was accepted my first semester, but I have a friend who is technically a sophomore, but was accepted as a performance major this year (so basically she's a year behind).

I could never be a performance major. At my school, they are EXPECTED to practice 5-6 hours a day .... heck, I could never do that. Ed majors are generally only expected 1-2 hours, plus I concentrate on many minor instruments as well.

I have a two majors so appallingly unique that during a public debate at the university, a distinguished Professor of Economics proclaimed that he had never heard of such a combination in all his 43 years of teaching.
I'm a general art major (I can apply for graphic design next year), as well as an economics major. Confusing. It makes no sense, but I love both.

I'm a music education instrumental/general major (clarinet as primary instrument). Teaching certificate will be in P-12 (pre-school thru 12th grade; I think all, or at least most, music education teaching certificates are either K-12 or P-12). I'll be student teaching at the elementary level for the Spring 09-10 semester. Ideally I'd like teach K-8 (or P-8) general and instrumental music. But we'll see what actually happens next year (when I will hopefully find a job). ;D
We're not really allowed to double major in music ed. and performance. We only have an instrumental/general and choral/general BME, so if you want general/instrumental/choral, you have to take another year (or at least another semester). I decided to forgo that, although now I wish I had more choral training.

For right now, I'm majoring in music ed, so that's what I voted for. I plan on switching to performance ASAP, though, but we'll see.
