HOLY FUDGE what the heck is that!! My BD owns a few double-bell euphs. In fact, he makes them. He also makes strange hybrid trombones and owns a Superbone!!! He does interesting things when he's bored...

Oh, at the FSU Summer Music Camp, I got to play a natural horn and a descant horn. I also got to play in a steel drum ensemble.

I went to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and in their instrumental collection, I saw a Stradivarius violino piccolo. Basically, a violin, but an octave higher. The collection included tons of archaic instruments. They also own a pair of 100% silver kettledrums that were played on horseback for military ceremonies.
One of the days this spring when I was substitute teaching, the students had an assembly where this guy brought in two cases of old instruments related to the recorder. Of these, one in particular that stands out in memory was a rackett. It sounded just like its name. Way cool.

My school has a few rare instruments: ~Alto Flute ~Bass Flute ~Eb Contrabass Clarinet ~Soprano Sax ~Flugel Horn ~Herald Trumpets ~one of those one man band thingys... with a little bike horn, tamborine and stuff.
That's about it.

^wow, I love flugelhorns. I hope my section gets to use them during our next show. I've heard the large bore ones are easier to blow air through than a trumpet. another rare instrument i've heard of is the serpent, an interesting shaped tuba-like archaic brass instrument that is ironically usually made of wood. there are soprano, tenor, baritone, bass and contrabass serpents.

^ Yes, I saw some serpents at the Museum of Fine Arts mentioned above. They are, in a word, awkward. In that same family is the ophecliede, which is a very low keyed bugle. They were used very well in Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique."

^that's cool, mh.
I like Berlioz, though my mom says his music doesn't make sense. It does! Everything has sense. And I should listen to Symphonie Fantastique. I've heard a sub-contrabass serpent play a concert B flat scale, but I should hear it play actual STUFF.
Oh, and racketts are WEIRD. Again, I've heard a contrabass rackett play a scale (mp3 file) and it was all low and raspy that you couldn't really identify the note the first time.
