Mama mia! Did they all conduct? Only 2 during regular season. But we do military style routines during playoffs so they all get to conduct. We've had 5 on this system for YEARS. Only having 2 is weird.

just over 100 people this year, and out leadership goes Horn/Drum/Guard Sergeant, then section leaders. We have a conductor, but she won't be a field commander and take the title Drum Major until next year- she started last year, but showed that she had quite a bit of progress to be made before she could have the privilege of leadership/power.

How old is your band? Usually, a band STARTS with a dm and then appoints sergeants as necessary, or that's my understanding. Then again, your band is, from what you've said, far from a standard high school band (better in many ways).

usually we do have a dm with leadership responsibilities, but she abused her power a lot last year and our director revoked it. Unfortunately, there is too little interest in my band to have dm auditions, so we're basically stuck with whoever's interested.

maaaybe might have, if there was enough interest, but like I said, it's hard to find dm's. I would have taken it, as my director offered it to me, but I didn't like the idea of having to give up marching and playing (and I ended up getting Horn Sergeant, which for me is the best of both worlds). There are a few other people who are in similar positions- they'd like the position and probably be good at it, but don't want to give up performing on the field.

My Band has 2 Other Drum Majors and Myself for our band of 100, we do very spread out, but some are pretty close and tight, with 3 drum majors you at least can see one at all times...at least thats what my BD says.....

2 drum majors for 64 kids, now 2 drum majors for somewhat less than 64 kids.

We have 2 DMs for about 60 kids. The BD basically uses us like personal assistants (or, as I'm fond of calling us, the band nursemaids) so there is way too much work for only 1. Last year the majority of my responsibilities included making music copies and running the Dr. Beat.

LOL that's my job in our band. I do all the nuts nobody else wants to do, including cleaning up after percussion.

we have three drum majors for about 170 members, but it might be closer to 180 because they let more kids into pit and the guard is a little bigger too. we usually only have two dms conducting though, and the other is running back and forth between front field and back field. we've gone years with only two dms though, but kids in the band complained because they couldn't always see the center podium and sometimes the other dm was on the other side.
i'd say *5-50=1 dm, 50-125=2 dms, 125-250=3dms, 250+=4 dms
*i'm assuming even the smallest bands have 5 or more people.

We're strictly parades, possibility of a homecoming field show. We are 65 members (13 dl, 10 cg, 3 permanent hg, and only 37 winds). We have 2 dms. The reason (I think) is one directs in front, and the other stands halfway down the band and directs the sousas and drumline. We don't really need 2 people to direct, but our blocks and setup makes two necessary.

Since the DL carry the beat (despite what anyone might say) it makes sense for them to have their own DM.

Well, it's not technically their dm, but that's how it's always been: the shorter dm directs the band, the tall one does dl. I think it works out well. I'm just saying that in order to handle 65 people (directing excluded), one dm would be enough.
