So, I have a band of about forty, all in all, and we have a drum major, and that's it--no subordinate leadership outside of SL. I've seen bands our size with one, and I've seen bands our size with two. How many DM's do you have relative to your band size?
I personally think our band is kind of 75% of the way between no band and a band that needs two dm's, if that makes sense. If we had, oh, fifteen, twenty more people, it might work out in our favor to have a DM-in-training be a sophomore, but at our size presently, it would be too many chiefs and not enough indians.
Any thoughts?

Around 250 Members. 3 Drum Majors Our Band Director Says- "Drum and Bugle Corps do it with one" So we have a DM backfield every show... so he can show off or sexy uniforms That have a black back. Lol

We have about 90-100 members in our group. We have 2 DM's. The actual drum major, and an assistant who is usually to the side (where needed), or backfield, and sometimes they go back and forth between both. I would say forty is a good number for just one DM, but that's just my opinion.

We have 4 DMs for our band that is just short of 300 people. It's a bit much, I know, but thats how our band is set up. We have a MASSIVE student leadership team though.

My high school band had about 40, and we had two drum majors. In all respects, we didn't need two. We went one year with one and were fine. The only reason we had two was because of the leadership issue, so that all of it wouldn't be on one person, which I think in a way is smart. The funny thing was, when we turned around for backfield, a marcher in the show had to conduct. It was poorly set up that the one DM would conduct and the other would be in the pit. I thought if there was one for those situations, it would have worked out better.
IUP has about 185 people and 3 DMs. It works out perfectly.

I'm seeing >60=1 60-120=2 <120=3, judging from your posts. Four DM's is too much, I think, for any band--that's when you need guard, drum and horn captains. I've always personally liked the idea of a field commander who marches with the rest of the band, but fills in for the DM when the DM isn't around, and who can take the podium for reverse-facing marching. We had a band we competed against with about 50 and two or three DM's, but they had like three or four reverse facing sets and the DM's didn't conduct back there at all. It also depends somewhat on the DM and whether they can handle everybody by themselves.

I'm seeing >60=1 60-120=2 <120=3, I'd agree with that, a second might be introduced closer to40 or 50 though. I can see a need for a fourth only if a band does movements where they turn around and march facing visitor's side but that'd be out of convince only. At 203 3 drum majors is almost to few sometimes and that's why a majority of the upperclassmen are SLs of some sort (squad or section) as well as a director's council of sorts. Alternatively I've seen some really small bands were there is no set DM, rather each song a band member is pulled out to conduct. But the schools I've seen do that around here are... special.

My school doesn't do the field shows. The only marching we do is for the Veterans Parade. We have 2 drum majors for about 30 kids in the spirit band. But it's also not really required to go to the pep games, so between 15 and 25 kids show up to the games.

we have 3 DMs to about 150/175 students. i think it's a good number to have, that way, everyone can have a pretty good view of at least one of us. i think that having more than 3 DMs for any band is kinda overkill, but that's just my opinion.

I agree, although I don't understand why that's the magic number. It must have some deep-seated psycological meaning, like the Holy Trinity

1:100 (200ish members) But there are more like 135 field spots- we aren't marching everyone. So, I guess more like 1: 70 But we had 180 ish this year, and 5 DMs. Go fig.

Our band has 80 people, and 2 drum majors. A junior one, and a senior one. Our BD picks the junior one at the end of their sophomore year, and they're in training in the summer.

My band had 1 DM last year, with about 75 people total. (It was also our director's first year, so we just had the DM and the SLs). This year, we have 2 DMs, brass and woodwind captains, SLs, and a bunch of other leadership roles. According to what our director says, we're getting about 20 more winds, and a couple more auxilliary.
