When it gets that cold I personally get some of those hot hold thing that make heat in a bag and stuff them up my gloves. You can march with it and perform and everything and jsut your normal moving around will shake them up and make them create heat.
Heat usually sucks more though...especially when you have full wool band uniforms

I wish it would hurry up and decide wether it's cold or hot around here- right now it's freezing in the mornings and burning in the afternoon.

We just had a random cold day and it started snowing.
I am getting a plastic mouthpiece from kellymouthpieces.com. Any bad experiences?

It was supposed to snow today. We're just glad it rained during marching band practice two days ago instead of snowing.

I live in Colorado. Competition season results in very cold hands, very cold fingers, etc. It's always a dream for finals to be on a day that's actually somewhat warm (like this year!). But, after about two bands after us, the wind picked up. IT WAS COLD. the band that got second actually had shakos all over the field, it was so windy. But, my freshman year, one of our basses was so flat, the tuner that that she was playing a whole half-step down. And then our section leader's (who was a senior that year) fingers froze during our finals competition. he literally could NOT move his fingers. It made him so sad. And then no full retreat of course. Then, we go to San Antonio Super Regionals. It's a blasting 60-80 degrees at night, and some of the bands were complaining how cold it was. We said, "We're the Colorado band. This is AMAZING." Again, my freshman year, we were doing circle drill in the parking lot, with full out pouring RAIN. Our Assitant BD says, "Hey, it could be worse!" Lightning thunders overhead. @oscarisamazing: Hurray, fellow coloradoan! Our finals competition that we talked about, it was about 15, maybe 19 at the most. xD

^No lie. Getting a letter jacket next year, and my fingerless gloves are going to LIVE in that thing. Not only that, but I am probably going to get me a nice beanie for under my shako. What really sucks is when the Tuesday night before Delta it is thirty-ish and then we go up there and we bake all day (as in take off your jacket following the show and have your band t-shirt drenched in sweat)

HAHAHA! we did that at one game and the whole trumpet section had them and they all fell out when we did visuals [i.e. punch air and stuff like that] so there were flying heat packs coming from the trumpet section. the worst part was we didnt have them when we got back in the stands. haha. and that was probly the only cold game i have been to. but then again i have been to some REDICULOUSLY hot ones. thank you texas. -uhg-

Our last competiton....it was during the day, but it was roughly 35 degrees, and overcast with 40 mph wind gusts or something like that. Our uniforms for the show were karate jackets.....so not much protection. While we were waiting to go on, our bd told us to move our lines together so that we could huddle against each other for warmth....it was pretty amazing. Everyone's fingers were so cold that our playing pretty much sucked.....but we still managed a record high finish for the band.

It was about 15 and windy at our last game. I don't even want to talk about have aboslutely freezing it was. Everyone's valves froze before half time. We were all huddled together in a group and we still freezing. Luckily I don't think we sounded too awful during halftime, but it was still pretty bad. After half time was a different story, though. Everyone completely lost it and we just were miserable. Almost everyone ended up singing their parts instead of playing them.
A few people were still having issues with their instruments two days later. The ice expanded inside one boy's trombone so much that his slide is hardly usable.

We just had a random cold day and it started snowing. I am getting a plastic mouthpiece from kellymouthpieces.com. Any bad experiences? I'd say, as long as you don't play on it regularly it will be fine. I've heard people tell me that it's horrible for you, and others who say it's a gift from god. My only beef with the product is that it only comes in one size (i believe), the 6 1/2 AL. I play on something much larger, so I think I'd have trouble adjusting back and forth. For my moneys worth, I bought a gold mouthpiece (mainly because nickle/silver ones irritate my lips) but they also warm up MUCH faster than the typical ones. Myself and another baritone in my section had gold mouthpieces, and lets say we were the happiest brass players in the section on cold days
