Seriously, I love you redkel. You make so much sense sometimes. Around here, I think there's a MSBOA district honor band for our district... but I'm not positive. I've never tried out for it if there is one, though. I've never known anyone who's done it before, hence the uncertainty of there being one. There's also the MSBOA All-State band and orchestra, which I was going to try out for this year, but realized I wanted to after the application deadline. I know a LOT of people who do either the band or orchestra every year, so I'm pretty sure it exists. (edit, because I forgot about this one) Then there's the MSBOA Honor Band. That one... I don't know anyone who's ever done it, though I think I heard about a couple of people from MYB who did. You have to get a I on a proficiency solo at state solo & ensemble to even be considered for it, but the only ones that ever really make it are the ones who get perfect (or pretty darn near perfect) scores on proficiency 3 solos. So that one... well, we'll find out next year if I'm a candidate. As far as what I actually do, though: I'm big on university honor bands. All of the universities around here have some form of honor band... EMU, MSU, and CMU (not very close, but still ) all have one, and the University of Michigan has the Youth Ensembles. I've done EMU's honors band for two years, CMU's one year, and MYB (Michigan Youth Band) two years. I tried out for MSU's honors band this year but didn't make it, which I was more than okay with. Some people thought I was crazy, to actually be happy to be rejected, but they don't understand what it's like to be constantly accepted into honors bands. Getting rejected after being, as I said, constantly accepted-and even being 1st chair at one point-is a good thing. It makes you doubt yourself, and it makes getting that acceptance letter worth so much more. I found something to work towards, because with the other bands, I would be in a low chair and just be happy to be in that band. First chair didn't concern me. But not being accepted at all.... it showed me there was something else out there that I can't even be last chair in unless I put in some effort. And to me.... that's priceless.

I don't think we have a region or an area honor band. We have a conference honor band, but it doesn't affect All-State. We also have the various university honor bands like University of Minnesota and St. Olaf.

In January, I made all Area Symphonic Band on Euphonium. All area takes up 32 schools in North Jersey and I got 3rd chair I would've gone for Region but I didn't think I would make Area, let alone 3rd chair

We have honor bands, too. You audition for them live, though. We have All-Region (A-6A) in Southwestern Oklahoma. I go to a small school, and we have Shortgrass. It's just like All-Region but with schools A-3A only in SW OK. Then for small schools (A-3A) we have OSSBDA (Small School) All-State. To audition for "High School" honor bands, you must be a sophomore, junior, or senior. Then we have OMEA (Oklahoma Music Educators Association) All-State for classes A-6A. Because I'm from a small school, not many people take music seriously here. I do, and I made OMEA All-State this year (the 2nd ever sophomore to make it...the first girl played bass clarinet. I play Bb and Eb. I got 1st alternate on Eb, and 11th chair on Bb...kind of awkward). Everyone was happy for me, but it's kind of awkward when you stick out like that. At OMEA All-State there are no sophomores in front of me. There are 24 clarinets, and two sophomores (the other girl is 21st). I also made 1st chair at our Shortgrass honor band (there's only one HS band in this). Then I got 5th chair in the top HS band at All-Region (Symphonic band). At Small-School All-State I got 7th chair clarinet. People are happy for me, and I appreciate it, but there's always a person or two who aren't too happy. We have 3 rounds to OMEA All-State. The first one takes place at our All-Region auditions. If you make it to the 2nd round, you are assigned (just like everyone else) two new etudes to work up in one month. The next month is the 2nd and final round auditions (they're on the same day). If you make it past the 2nd round, you go to the finals. There are only 2 rounds for Small-School (OSSBDA) All-State, which are on the same day. Oklahoma seems to be pretty organized. But if people get mad at you for making an honor band, don't let it get to you. I worked my butt off to make OMEA All-State as a sophomore (and I will my junior and senior years, too), and I'm thankful that I made it. So, there is a reason you made that honor band as a freshman! Congrats!!!!! Hey, another Oklahoman! I'm in the CODA region, though. I made the CODA (Central Oklahoma Directors Assoc.) 8th/9th grade band this year. Sixth chair, unfortunately, I did horrible on the sightreading. Yukon sends a ton of tubas there, though, so I'm happy.

Our second-chair clarinet made it...our first-chair/drum major didn't. She's not too happy. We also had a sophomore flute and a junior trumpet who made it last year, make it.
Our second-chair trombone was chosen for the Fort Lewis Select Band, and our first-chair wasn't. We think it's either a clerical error, or our BD is being weird.

^Our former first chair clari didn't make region orch (while second and 3rd did) and then she placed lower than 2nd and 3rd chair at region band. And she, a senior, will be sitting second chair to a sophomore next semester. You can bet she's happy... [/sarcasm]

^ouch, hopefully she handles.
I think 7 or 8 people from my band got into NCBA this year, at least that i know of. 3 horns, 1 alto (me), 1 trumpet, 1 tuba, 1 clarinet, and there's probably more. I haven't seen the list yet.

We have an area band, which is a pretty big chunk of our state, and we audition for it w/judges. Then on a completely separate scale, we have region band then all-state, which also is a live audition. But they both have the same solo pieces.

I tried out on alto and there was one other kid and he didn't make it. There were 2-3 chairs, though. Here we have to get better than a 60/100, I think.
