In my neck of the woods (I can't believe I just typed that, by the way), we have what we call Honor Bands. There's an all-conference (all of the surrounding high schools) honor band, an honor jazz band, and possibly an honor orchestra composed of the top instrument players in the area. I am so excited that I made it into all-conference honor band... as a freshman. I didn't even know that my bd submitted me for a spot. The bad thing is that I only made second-to-last-chair clarinet, but oh well. The only other downside is that I'm the only freshman in my school who made it, so now half my friends are happy for me and the other half murderously jealous. Such is the life of a band geek, I guess.
Do you guys have Honor Bands? If not, what do they call them in more normal parts of the world? Do you audition, or does your bd send in a recording of you... sometimes behind your back? And do your friends congratulate or spit on you for making them?

We have honors bands and District, County, Regionals, State, etc. They're separate things. Honors bands are typically with colleges while the others are with a teaching association.
For Districts you audition, for County's if you make Districts you're in, and there's a round-robin of assignments between schools.
My Friend explains it a lot better, "there's a re-audition at each festival and that determines the rankings for the next level. so in essence you could've been last trombone at districts and upset the whole section and go on to regionals. they also i think rule out freshmen for regionals"
I'm not sure about Honors bands.

I think we just have random ones you somehow get wind of and apply for. All the ones we ever go to are like "[insert college/university name here] Honors Band." So that's not really district or anything...unless I don't know what I'm talking about, which is very possible.
The one I'm going to (which I also went to last year) doesn't require you to actually try out for it. All you need is your band director's recommendation, and technically to have done lots of other things like S&E and lessons.

Well, my bd's signed me up for state without first telling me, but that's ok. I guess they figured that I'd ask them anyway. They also signed me up for a youth solo competition, but they asked me about it first, so it's all good.
All that we have around here anymore is all-state. We used to have an all-district band, but we just switched conferences, so we don't have one this year, which is kind of a bummer, but oh well. More time to practice my state music (which I'm still waiting on! I hope it comes in the mail sometime soon).

We have District, Regions and State Band. I've never been to any because I started so late and didnt have a concert euphonium. We also have around my area a band called Diocesan Honors Band, which is all the catholic HS's kids. We also have the PMEA District One West Honors Band, and the IUP Honors Band which is run out of my university.

We have honor bands, too. You audition for them live, though. We have All-Region (A-6A) in Southwestern Oklahoma. I go to a small school, and we have Shortgrass. It's just like All-Region but with schools A-3A only in SW OK. Then for small schools (A-3A) we have OSSBDA (Small School) All-State. To audition for "High School" honor bands, you must be a sophomore, junior, or senior. Then we have OMEA (Oklahoma Music Educators Association) All-State for classes A-6A. Because I'm from a small school, not many people take music seriously here. I do, and I made OMEA All-State this year (the 2nd ever sophomore to make it...the first girl played bass clarinet. I play Bb and Eb. I got 1st alternate on Eb, and 11th chair on Bb...kind of awkward). Everyone was happy for me, but it's kind of awkward when you stick out like that. At OMEA All-State there are no sophomores in front of me. There are 24 clarinets, and two sophomores (the other girl is 21st). I also made 1st chair at our Shortgrass honor band (there's only one HS band in this). Then I got 5th chair in the top HS band at All-Region (Symphonic band). At Small-School All-State I got 7th chair clarinet. People are happy for me, and I appreciate it, but there's always a person or two who aren't too happy. We have 3 rounds to OMEA All-State. The first one takes place at our All-Region auditions. If you make it to the 2nd round, you are assigned (just like everyone else) two new etudes to work up in one month. The next month is the 2nd and final round auditions (they're on the same day). If you make it past the 2nd round, you go to the finals. There are only 2 rounds for Small-School (OSSBDA) All-State, which are on the same day. Oklahoma seems to be pretty organized. But if people get mad at you for making an honor band, don't let it get to you. I worked my butt off to make OMEA All-State as a sophomore (and I will my junior and senior years, too), and I'm thankful that I made it. So, there is a reason you made that honor band as a freshman! Congrats!!!!!

My unversity hosts the Tri-State Band Festival which is meant to attract students from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Is the Tri-State thing associated with the national version of the GMEA/FMEA? If I could EVER make all state, that would be so awesome! We have GMEA stuff: District Honor Band (band people from a bunch of counties), Region Honor Band (if you try out for All-State and make district, you make Region, which divides the state in half), and All-State. At district, you try out for All-State and play the first half of the etude they write for you, 8 major scales, a chromatic, and sight reading. Then, if your score is high enough, you can get "recommended" for All-State. Then you go to the All-State second audition, where you do the entire etude (both lyrical & technical parts), and a lyrical & technical sight reading. The sight reading is usually impossible...last year mine was in 3/4, about 120, and at the top it said "Waltz, in one." Then, if you're in GISA, there's All Select, which you get nominated to do and audition for you chair there. There's also JanFest, which, Tales From Band Camp, is at UGA. Didn't you go there?

We have SCCBDA County Honor Band (live audition), NCBA All-Northern (recording), and CBDA All-State (recording). I'm the only person at my school that knows about All-Northern besides my BD, and he wouldn't let me audition because it would interfere with County. There are a few other state and regional groups that send flyers around to people that audition for All-State. The only group that I was nominated for without auditioning was CMEA Junior Honor Band in eighth grade. I wasn't chosen, only two were allowed from each school and the picked a baritone and a french horn, but it was their loss because I got the letter from All-State the next week! (okay, it was Junior High, but still...)

We have county and states as far as regular honor bands go; However there are many college honor bands I attend every year. Shepherd has a pretty good one, as well as Frostburg State in Maryland.

just out of curiosity, why is this in the social issues? we have districts and all-state. both by live audition, but you have to gain all-state elegibility. you get it either by making the top certain number (depends on instrument) chair in districts, or by getting into senior regional orchestra(theres numbers for that, too, but for the winds it's pretty much everyone. to quote my bd, it's "an automatic ticket to all-state".) some people do the george mason honor bands. and random stuff like that. but i don't know much about it. we host district band auditions, so that's always fun.

Sorry if I wasn't too clear on this, but my point was also about how people react to making it into honor bands. For example, a lot of my friends are happy for me, but some of them aren't.
