we have districts and all-state. both by live audition, but you have to gain all-state elegibility. you get it either by making the top certain number (depends on instrument) chair in districts, or by getting into senior regional orchestra(theres numbers for that, too, but for the winds it's pretty much everyone. to quote my bd, it's "an automatic ticket to all-state".) some people do the george mason honor bands. and random stuff like that. but i don't know much about it. we host district band auditions, so that's always fun. ok, i lied. i do know much about the george mason honor band.. .because i'm going to it this weekend!!! we're almost across teh street from george mason (seriously, our entire grade walked there for a fieldtrip). they sent my director an email saying "we need these instruments! tell people to apply" so he passed along the message... it was pretty amusing to be turning in a form in early january that said on it "due by december 15". so i got the audition music for band placement/seating on saturday, and the auditions are thursday. joy. but only one of the three etudes is difficult, so whatever. it shoudl be fun. and i'm pissed at the vboda people, because apparently bass clarinets aren't allowed to be eligible for all-state via SRO because we arent real instruments. hrtdjky, ubuvykrubtnim stupid people. makes me mad, because i was all excited that i would get to auditon for all state, but i don't. i'm only one chair off from being eligible through district band, too. maybe first or 2nd chair will be a typical apathetic bass clarinet player and not want to audition ::crosses fingers:: unlikely though. edited for a typo that changed the meaning of what it was saying.

UMASS has an Honor band. My band director submitted a bunch of our names, and quite a few of us were accepted! It's really exciting because our band "group" more or less all got in!! I can't wait! My band director said when he was in it, it was a better exoerience than All-State! And I'm not completely sure how my band mates would react because we didn't really make a big deal about it even though we are very excited. I do suppose though that they would either be very supportive or not really care. I highly doubt they would be jealous because it's clear as day that we are the biggest band geeks in our band!! lol. There aren't very many people in my band who care as much as us...

I think we have some Honor like bands in my area but I have enough going on with just school bands that I don't really need anything else, not that I wouldn't love to do it if I got the chance. Besides we've got enough drama with in our band program that I don't need to go to an outside band to find any.
We used to have 4 bands Freshman band, Concert band (for people who were in it because their parents forced them to or they wanted to still be in marching band) Symphonic band and Wind Ensamble which is the top band in the school. We've been trying to change the band program the last few years though and so Last year there was no Freshman band, which worked out fine. this year though they desided they wanted four bands again so reinstated Freshman band but instead of letting them try out for spots in higher bands, all freshmen were put into one class. Its huge. That wouldn't be that bad except to after placing everyone they needed to in higher bands, concert band, the one I'm in was left with 20 people and really strange intrumentation, so theres no way we can play together for concert and still sound decent so the directors came up with another brilliante idea. Now we're combined w/ the symphonic band for concerts. This was fine for concert band people but Symphonic band hated it and us. they thought they had worked hard to get into a higher band and now the lower band was going to bring them down and frankly I agreed with them. Concert has a few epople who care but a lot of people spend the class goofing off and we don't get anything done so we don't improve so when we combine for concerts it spounds worse than it would with just symphonic. Everything died down though once we had chair adutions. only one symphonic person had been beaten by a concert person and that was because they were on the same level in band placement adutions and he had won because he was a grade higher. that causes some mild drama from time to time but the guy has givin up challenging me so everythings ok. However contest is coming up and the symphonic people are starting to hate us again. I see their point totally but its kinda sucks when your friends are getting mad and taking it out on you because you mistakenly got placed in the slacker band. Their just venting but it can get kinda hurtful. Next year the bands are going back to mornal and no other class will have to deal with this stuff but right now it sucks.

Well, I can't tell if marching is better because I'm in middle school. ;D

Since I was reading through this thread again, I'd just like to give an update on the situation of our band program (I go to the same school as bandie4life210). Things are not back to normal; now there are three bands again. They are freshman band, symphonic band, and wind ensemble.
Freshman band:all the freshmen Symphonic band: all non-freshmen not good enough for wind ensemble Wind ensemble: the "good" non-freshmen
Now if you'll read the paragragh up there you'll notice that our freshman year there was no freshman band. I'd also point out that until last year, traditionally there was at least one freshman in wind ensemble. If you want my opinion, the way we did things freshman year makes much more sense to me than anything else if we're going to have only three bands. As far as the current situation goes, there are at least two major problems that I see. First off, there are likely to be talented freshmen who are sick of the other freshmen who aren't very good and don't care. I remember being incredably excited to get to high school where I could audition into a higher band where people were actually good. Also, there are now only two options for non-freshmen. Either you're good or you're not. I tend to believe there's an in between somewhere. Wind ensemble is moving to class AA (thearetically) next year and going to Carnegie Hall. (yes, THE Carnegie Hall. I'm so excited, I can't even tell you.) Everyone in wind better deserve to be there. But I'd hate to be shoved in Symphonic because there wasn't enough room in wind ensemble. It's got to be filled with slackers. I suppose it's better than last year in that concert band and symphonic band are one to begin with so it might not inspire as much drama. Maybe not.

We got to play in the Chan Center at UBC, and compared with the usual gyms we play, it was freaking awsome... when me and the people who were in prov honour choir went to Chan center to see the national honour band, we were all going "yea... we performed here with an honour group too!" and sharing in this special excitement EDIT: lol yea, i've noticed: honour seems kinda weird without that extra u

FYI: Honor Bands in Ohio are usually broken down into the OMEA districts. District is based on recommendation by your BD. There are several honor bands that you all may not be aware of either. If you are a member of the FFA -- they have an honor band every year at their National Convention (ask your FFA advisor). The 4-H used to have one. Most major universities (OSU, etc.) with huge music programs sponsor honor bands as well. Auditons or not -- they are called honor bands for a reason.
Ohio and some other states also have an all-state band that performs yearly at their respective state fairs (aosfb.org). Some regional or district sports conferences also sponsor an *all-star* football game and also an *all-star* or honor band.
Recognition from your BD by recommending you for an honor band is an honor in itself. By doing so -- he/she is putting his/her own reputation on the line by suggesting that you have the social and musical maturity to hold your own with the best student musicians around and represent your school and community. For non-audition situations -- if you make it...or don't is not a reflection on your abilities. Most of the time it's based on instrumentation needs, etc.
But -- how you handle your participation is the reason for this thread, right?
Do you brag it up and boast about your accomplishments? Let your talent and accomplishments speak for themselves.
Do you rub it in that you made it and others didn't? Be GRACIOUS.
How do you react when you aren't accepted? Blame some unseen or unknown person in charge or shrug and say -- they must have had a lot of talented applicants? Try again.
Do you obsess about what chair or playing position you receive? In an honor band -- EVERYONE IS GOOD! Every instrument and position is important and every chair has to nail their part. Be happy that you are among your peers and doing what you love to do. Don't be a whiner -- be a player!
Honor Bands are amazing experiences if you go into it with the right mindset. Sure, you are competing some -- but approach your participation as a way to be a better player and as a learning experience and you will go home with a case full of memories that will last you a lifetime.
As a student player -- I participated in many honor bands and now get the joy of recommending students to participate in them. Keep trying and if you don't make it into one of those bands, then use your talents to make your own band better -- be a mentor to underclassmen or help your section.
