I probably all ready said this, but we make marks in chalk. For long jump, we use half-tennis balls which work really well, so that might be a good one for a band to use. They don't blow away or really care about being steppedo n.

Section leaders are responsible for buying a few hundred multicoloured poker chips before we start learning drill. And labeling three to six for each person in the section with their dot number.. ie B13 gets one red, blue, green, white, and black chip. For EVERYONE.
Everyone gets that and a drill chart (complete with a handy strangle-you-in-the-wind yarn necklace). Every few weekends the drum majors, 'junior' staff (aka useless jerk and sax-guy), and anyone that can drive there come by a spray-paint The Swamp (practice field) down with hashes and yard lines.
The asphalt has an actual field painted on it permanently (somehow). It's laid down in the same stuff as whatever the regular parking places are made with. We use it for after-school rehearsals and band camp.
We only use the actual football field for pregame rehearsals, all-day Saturday practices, etc.

We just use shoes, flip flops, keys, etc. to mark our spots... probably because our drills are so simple you really don't need to mark your spot. But man, you guys are lucky, with practice fields and stuff. On our practice field, we're lucky if the yard lines are actually 5 yds. apart, because the guys who paint it usually don't care, or have time, or who knows what else. That, and it never gets repainted. Gotta love our school. Of course, it is high school, and we don't do anything important, so it kind of makes sense.

We dont use markers. We have spraypaint for hashes and yard lines, captains have full drill books, each person has a drill book which is there own little book where you mark your own spot in the book along with a neck tie that gives you wierd tan lines!! lol! It is just repitition. We do it so much that it sticks in your brain and you dont forget it. I dont think people should use markers because it is not about a certain spot on the field, what matters is if you fit into the formation.

We use poker chips during band camp. They're still out there; I went out to the practice field out of boredom and there were poker chips everywhere, most of them broken.

We use chalk to mark along our right foot in the back parking lot. No one else is back there in the summer (we do track shows), so it wears off before school starts. We have to know our spots pretty quickly. We march on pavement or dirt racetracks, so we hardly ever use the football field !

my hs band uses spray paint to mark the yd lines and hashes, but the band (minus guard) has coordinate sheets. the guard gets the drill charts so that we can see where we fit in compared to everybody else plus our coach usually isn't satisfied with whatever the drill writer does so she changes them anyway. our school has a really strong football program so all three football fields (stadium and 2 practice) are astro turf. we usually get to practice on one of them though. occasionally the guard will have to use the parking lot field but it's painted with parking space paint, but blue instead of white so it's pretty accurate. i think the front sideline might be a little off though.
