We use the outfield of the baseball field, and since they practice all through the summer and fall along with little league, and summer leagues,we can't use spraypaint. So we use Poker Chips instead. They actually work pretty good and they don't move for anything, and they'll last for as long as we need them.

spray paint?? yeah, that would be weird using. it would definatly make us more reliant on where we're going. we use chips (not poker chips though). theyre about 2''x2''. when we're setting new drill we only have about 5 down at a time. then when we make a new spot we pick one up. theyre expensive but they work. plus taking them off makes you stop looking at the ground and start guiding.

We're not allowed to march on the football field because heaven forbid our sneakers in tidy patterns would do more damage then football cleats running all willy-nilly. I know how that goes...*grumbles* Anyway, my HS band uses small colored flags (utility line marker-sized) on the practice field. LOL, we joke about how our BD goes around town to steal all the utility companies' flags just so we can learn drill. Each set has a different color, and once we've memorized 5 sets or so, we'll only mark the opening set, go to the next few memorized, then start marking the newest charts. Usually you can tell which flag is yours just by the location of it compared to the rest, but many of us took up decorating our flags so they stand out. If we have early-morning rehearsal and then class later on that day, we'll just leave flags on the field. The last time through the drill for the day, we'll pick up flags on our way. And we usually have the drill memorized by the time we actually rehearse on the main field, though I do remember seeing the band using flags on the main field once when I was in junior high.

I had not seen any use of spraypaint until I arrived at U of I, in our pregame we make a massive circle and pentagon, so those sets have been spraypainted on our field in the south quad (they turned our old field into a whole in the ground to build something )

^ We have a set this year that is a giant circle with a pentagon in it. That's not even the hard part, we have to rotate the pentagon around. It's supposed to be the "Wheel In The Sky" since our show theme is the rock band Journey. The only way we ever mark out spot is by "personal markers" usually a little stuffed animal. And we only do that we learning and very rarly when reviewing the drill.

Well, we have two feilds. One is in the stadium so its already marked. The other is the middle school football feild and all we mark is the yard linds, the hashes and the gaks. We also have to re-spray paint everyother practice because it gets worn down by the 200 some odd people that use it during band and then the actual football team and everyother little middle schooler that feels like it so it dosn't really matter what we mark because it goes away in two days anyways. We use tape to mark our actual dots! like masking tape! and we write our number on it too! mine is # 19!

we used to practice in a tiny parking lot in a forgotton corner of our school somewhere outside the spanish rooms. The advantage of this was that we could spraypaint yardlines and spot markers on the parking lot to help us memorize our spots. The disadvantage was that the school board assumed since we had the parking lot wed never have to practice on the field, and so the first time we got on the field and marched without our drill spots was the first football game It was bad
This year they tore up our parking lot and we use little plastic drill markers with our drill numbers on them. Half the band lost theirs already.

I wouldn't trust the people in our band to not huff the spraypaint...*cough drumline cough*
The past 2 years we used poker chips, this year we're using chalk on the pavement.

We have little color flags that we write our names and drill numbers and on and stick in the ground, but they eventually break or the flags get pulled off the poles, etc. and the leadership get mad when we have to ask for new ones

We use sidewalk chalk, as our practice "field" is the student parking lot, the parking spaces are the yardlines...it a great multipurpose space except when someone forgets to move their car and people have to march around it.

We have our own field. We kinda steal it from the soccer team, but the band is more important at our school...
Anyway, we always use spray paint. Heck, our beginning spiral was spray painted, so that we just had to follow the line at the beginning.

My high school band practices on a parking lot, and we have spray paint dots as a way of marking the proper 8 to 5 marching step (1 dot every 4 steps on all the yard lines and in between). We also use the dots as marks for warm-up spots and chalk marks when working on drill. Yeah, that's Grissom High all right The parking lot behind the school We use duct tape to mark our sets The directors give stuff away to the people who collect the most duct tape after band camp or a hard week of rehearsal or something It gets ground into the pavement by cars thogh, so it's hard to get it up

at our HS the band has a field to itself out in the boonies of the school grouods and we do whatever we need to to mark our spots. the BDs mark a dot every 8 steps on and between every yard line to help us and some kids carry spray paint on a string on their belt loop to mark spots they can never seem to get right. Other kids just dig their heel into the ground and spin in a circle a few times, leaving a muddy circle...... that poor old field isn't in too good of shape by the time band camp is over!
