Ok, does anyone else's band tend to give each other odd nick names?! for example, in my band we have a kid who everyone calls Bear (his real name is Riley), a kid who everyone calls Rhino (his real name is Nate) and a kid who everyone calls Geezer (his real name is Nick). It recently occured to me that almomst no one, in my section in particular, goes by thier real name! anyone else experience this 'problem'? I luckily do not have a nick name, i am merely referred to as 'the chick trumpet' ;D

My old band director used to call me lilfluteplayer because when I was a freshman, I was so much smaller than the rest of my section and we had this marching judge at several of our comps who always referred to me as the lilfluteplayer off of the ___ yard line. It used to be my display name, but it kept on reminding me of his unexpected leaving and all the chaos and sadness that came along with it.

I'll put the Real name, nickname, and why their called that
Brandon-Lad-He used to call everyone "Lads and Lasses" his first year,so we started calling him lad,and it stuck.
David-Duh-I really don't know.
Seth-Blondo-He's in 7th grade,so he was the youngest one in the whole band.He just so happened to have blonde hair,so we called him blondo.
Nathan-Crawdad-He reminds everyone of a crawdad for some reason.
Alex-Porkchop-A senior equipment manager was hungry 2 years ago,so he called him porkchop and it stuck
Jim-Taco-A different equipment manager was hungry one day so he called him Taco and as with the above,it stuck.

we have a clarinet player called Smitty, his real name is Matt. I have no idea who Matt became Smitty but everyone calls his sister Taco, her name is Diana. My section leader gave her this name because she wanted to nickname after her favorite food but cookie sounded to much like a porn star's name so she went with Taco and it stuck. In guard we have a girl called Munchkin becuse in her freshman year she was alot shorter then everyone else. We also have a guard girl called Little Red becuse of her red hair. oh ya we have a pair of brother's that we just call them by their last names.

Ahhh nick names. Yes yes. There is a trumpet player that we refer to as his last name. And another trumpet that has so many nicknames, most plays off of his last name but there is one that some people call him which is "Wang". Anyways, our field commander was sometimes refered to as "Lianer". I think I have a new nickname which is "Mini [last name]".
Last names are usually the nicknames that people actually use though.

We had tons of nicknames in my high school band, usually either derived from the person's actual name, or from a particularly memorable event that they were involved in. From the top of my head we had: Michigan, Mini-Lee, Bon-Bon, Twin 1 and 2 (that was me, actually), Cason, Tigger, Jersey, Harry Potter, Bones, Dutch, Kaylee 1 and 2, Max Powers, Irish, El Diablo, Skittle, JER, and there's more that I'm sure I'm forgetting.
In college, I can only think of one person in the Wind Ensemble who goes by a nickname, and that's Jeremy the Hundredth. Don't know the story behind that one, but I kind of wish I did.

As a freshman and a soph- I was known as "Stick Shifty" because my last name is a long and nobody can spell or pronounce it sooo everyone always says "shifty" instead of my last name. Now it has been shortened from Stick Shifty to Shifty because my sister was Shifty and she graduated last year so I in a way inherited it.
I'm also known as the Nazi... with another word added to that... I think that that's pretty self-explanatory. I'm also The Donna 1.) I am the head of the Mello Mafia and a mafia always has a don so I feminized it and 2.) I'm a prima donna. I like things going my way and I don't like anything getting in my way.
As for nicknames in the rest of the band- there's a trumpet player called Beans... and every mello has a nickname... Shrimp, Rough Draft and Final Copy (twins), The Man (a girl who got drug tested on the guy day instead of the girl day bc she has masculine first and middle names), The Mouse, Band-Camp Skipper (later renamed Urban bc he told "it's not ghetto, it's urban"), and then there's a lot more I can't remember.

We've got a ton, lots of them are because all us bones make up fake middle names for our section shirt, but here's a short list... Big KAT (or BIG KAT's when refering to the section) Bone Daddy Dice OTG Filipino Shuter E-Mul E-Wil P-Funk Cheez-it Al Pal Onion Runyon J-Murph, the big Murph, J-Money B-Rad G-Schni, G-Schnizzle Fearless Leader, Charlie Brown "the beef" go-go boots big hairy sheep McBillion BIG tom (he used to be kinda a little guy) Dooley (so it's his real name, it's still awesome to say) And that's just the surface. If you need an explanation PM me, some of them aren't quite forum appropriate, but some of them are down right obvious.

This is the thread for me! I have about 20 of my own, so I won't post them all. Band nicknames are the best. These are two of my favorites given to me: - The Dirty Traffic Cone - at band camp my freshman year, I was next to another alto sax player for a whole song. She had this radiant bright orange shirt on, and I had a Texas Longhorns shirt on (you know, that rusty orange color). The instructor kept confusing us somehow, so the other sax player said, "Fine, I'm the traffic cone, and you're the dirty one." - The Three Lunged Fwa Monster - at the beginning of this season, my first season marching trombone, I had this tendency to not just blast notes, but to completely play them so loud that I thought my bell would crack, as the instructor pointed out. He said I had to be hiding a third lung somewhere in my body... and since the one time I played some loud note that sounded like a "FWA" noise, the baritone section named me that. Luckily I can control my "talent" - but it still comes out occassionally. But I suppose it's now a section "scale" - if a part calls for something really loud, now the trombones just ask me, "How many lungs should we use on this one?" There are some for other band members, including The Hoagie Nazi, The Human Garbage Disposal, Georgia, The Dirty Mexican, and some for groups, like one of my "band cliques," The Four Musketeers. I'm drawing a blank on some other ones...

We use the last name/nick name thing a lot as well Like this kid who's last name is Pfeffer, well, EVERYONE knows him just as Pfeff. off the top of my head here are all the nick names JUST FOR THE TRUMPETS! pfeff, bear, rhino, geezer, Paul Wall, gäbé (gah-bay), peter frampton, laugh-a-laugh-a-mus... yeah, basically whenthe trumpets call roll they refuse to use our REAL names and instead give everyone a nickname based off of what thier real name is, and some of them stick and are actually used all the time, and some are just for roll call on the bus and such.

we have some really dumb ones on drumline that are mostly there because a couple of the kids like to modify people's names, like "Crusty" (Rusty). then we have "the Freshman", which we just call her that because our drumline instructors couldn't ever remember her name until about halfway through marching season (since she was the only freshman), but we still just call her "Freshman". last year we also used to call one of our dm's "DADMN" behind his back, which I'm not going to tell you what it stood for, because it's not very board-appropriate. as far as my band nicknames go though, I don't really have many, but I have a couple... Mooshell- obviously a more fun way to say my name, started from a band kid. Superflute- I actually haven't been called this for quite a long time... which makes me very happy. Mickey- my friend (a band kid) calls me this, because when I was in 6th grade I used to have this Mickey Mouse shirt that said "Mickey" on the back, and my English teacher kept calling me that. we were talking about nicknames and how I didn't have one, and I mentioned that, and she loved it so now she always calls me that.

Alright well, my band director has recently just started calling me Carlissimo.... "the most Carly" umm just because.
Upperclassmen called this little dude who no one really likes 'Number 2' because i guess he's kind of a little poop to them.
Junior guy snare is sometimes called Sunshine...
Between me and my other freshman friends we call this one senior flute 'phsyco conceited sleeper beast' but that may not be exactly what you're talking about.
Every one calls baritones 'barely-a-tones.'
