I live on Long Island, (Junior in HS) and though I play the clarinet, i rather play the mellophone for marching band in college. One of the schools I'd like to go to is UConn, and they apparantly have a Brass Conversion course in the spring for those who want to start a new brass instrument which is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. However, seeing as I might no attend UConn due to financial or whatever issues that will probably arise, can you guys tell me how common it is for "Brass Conversion" in university marching bands? I was surprsied seeing as UConn is a large university and they needed slots for brass instruments, so I was wondering if schools like Penn State, Ohio State, have that kind of class/program?
And any good marching band programs in the northeast (not TOO far off NY please, i'm probably stretching it with Ohio) that I should know about as well?

At my high school all but one of the marching staff went to IUP (Indiana University of PA) for music. I know we have someone on here that is going there for music but I completely forget her name on here...
Most schools of music require music majors to learn all instruments so at the very least you can get a grounding in the required brass class(es).
I've also heard good things about SUNY: Buffalo but that may just be my brother blowing hot air since he's probably going there in the fall.
