Dunno if this is the right topic, but I thought I'd put it here.
So, we started winter drumline rehearsals on Monday, and the BD mentioned more than once that we need to find someone who can do a back flip, or at the very least a front flip, and have them join. So, as no one else in the school really gives us the time of day, a few of us are trying to learn. Our school BD can do a front flip, but he'll only help us if we basically get it.
Basically, what I'm getting at is does anyone here know how to do one of the flips? We don't have anything to jump off of, and I don't know if we can get a running start, but I'm sure it could be in if needed. Also, can you do it without using your hands? More specifically, with cymbals on?
Help would be greatly appreciated~

Hmmm... I mean, I can do the flips and stuff, but I'm not sure that I could explain? I'm also pretty sure that I could not do it with cymbals (kinda seems like it would throw off balance). Flips are all about jumping high, and just whipping your body around. I started by jumping off short walls and worked my way down (and up in some cases). But I learned the flips for parkour, since I got involved with a local group in high school, and they are all about jumping off of structures.
if your going to do the flips, make SURE you've always got someone to spot you. Make sure you're on a sufficiently padded surface, especially while you're learning. I've seen people get hurt because they don't think about that kind of stuff.

If your school has a gymnastics team, find out who the coach is. If he and/or she is caring enough teacher or coach, they might work with you a little bit. Yes, I know I am suggesting you go to the dreaded GYM ZONE but..
If you are lucky enough that the school has not cut gymnastics and there is both a girls and boys team, I would start and find out who teaches/coaches floor exercise. There is where most of the floor type flipping will come into play.
Another source you could try for a little help is the cheerleaders. If their “sponsor“ or coach is willing and they had the tumbling background, they might be able to get you going. Those would be the “free” places to try first.
If your town/city has a recreation program that might include tumbling that might be a place you could ask for help. Of course, there is always the cheer/tumbling/gymnastics schools but that would cost you money.
Whatever you do, first learn to do the flips without any extras. Next learn to do the flip with something that approximates the weight of the cymbal you are working with (about a 1 or two pound weight and hold out your hands like you have a cymbal) or use something soft at about the size of the cymbal with a little bit of weight. And lastly, I would use the cymbals. After all, the difference between a cymbal and a circular saw blade is the cost, the metal alloy used, and the saw blade has teeth and not just a sharp edge. Remember safty at all times and have a spotter work with you.
