My band always gets photocopies of our music, and usually we keep them unless for some reason they are lacking their originals for whatever reason.
I found out today that it's illegal and we probably shouldn't be photocopying or keeping the photocopies.
We use originals until the librarian can make all copies, but after she copies them we turn in the originals...
What does your band do?

As Head Librarian, I give them photocopies. I do not trust the people in our band with originals unless it's wind ensemble.

^I think you're golden as long as you're not performing the music.

Somehow, we all manage not to lose the originals....most of the time.
My BD always tells us the story of one 4th trumpet in jazz band a few years back who lost the entire huge black jazz band folder with 50 something tunes or so in it. He made the kid purchase all the scores for those songs again......that's the only way they could get back the parts. And to this day, the 4th trumpet folder is always missing something.....

In high school it was also photocopies that we were supposed to turn back in. (Some people's copies didn't make it back to the box.)
In college it's a mix. I was actually really shocked when I was first handed the originals... and my name was written on them in pen! Gasp! We still had to turn them back in. I ended up making my own copies to use because I didn't want to write on the originals.

It depends. I've gotten a few photocopies and a few originals. In college, they don't really think too much about people stealing music. We are generally all smart enough to know we don't own the music and to give it back.

It depends on what music we have. And what parts. In the music folders, there is so many pieces to each part its crazy. So it probably doesn't even matter if we turn them in or not. With my old BD, she was really strict with turning in music and you had to turn it in, even if it was photocopied. But now, the new BD hasn't had us turn in music. I still have music that we haven't even played that we got 1st trimester. And when there aren't enough parts for some music, we only photocopy when we need too.

I always get originals, but other people get photocopies. They either get them becuase they come from one of the huge sections that don't have enough originals, or that person can't be trusted with not losing stuff.

With our old BD, it was all originals, all the time. If you wanted a copy, you could make your own.
The next one didn't trust us with like anything, so all copies and still turned back in, or a major yelling session would occur.
Now, our current guy didn't really trust us at the beginning, but he's gotten pretty lax like our first guy. Like, we get copies sometimes, but if it's more than a page, he usually just gives us the originals.

We get originals and turn them in after the concerts. A lot of people never turn theirs in, and some people keep theirs until they graduate... We had somebody in my grade turn in stuff from his freshman year...

We normally just get copies and...well, what we do with them after varies. It depends on the song.

Our BD tends to make copies and makes us give them back. -_-

Our band trusts us a bit i guess, giving us all originals. But we get a big penalty if we damage/lose them...
