Yeah, part of that is that his peculiar personality (puts paper on his head when he's happy, jumps off the stage when he's not, won't let non-percussionists even TOUCH the drums, jumps a lot...) kind of scares some people... But he's a great guy. And you can't have him .

we (the flutes) have created a cool handshake that we all do before a performance. the drum line does a little dance while singing tea for too and if you don't do it then you will trip (supposedly, the drummers have never tripped though...) the drum major always does something in warm up (hugs, pound-its) it depends on whose drum major. and all the band members ALWAYS touch your plume. we run our hands up the other peoples plumes for good luck. at our first game (or the first time we wear our uniforms) we tell all the freshman their plumes are on backwards... it gets funny when they fall for it and even funnier when they fall for it a second time.

^^That wouldn't work with us, I've actually put my plume on backwards before... there's more feathers in the front of our plumes that goes over the edge of our hat.

We have to bend ours for angle because they are quite long... 14 in... but you can't literally put them in backwards. Our DM this year threw gang signs on the podium if the other band played a rap or R&B song.

some of our plumes are really short, and some are long, and some are shiny... but they all smell bad, and most have random feathers sticking out at weird angles. We'll always be like, "Haha! you have the stubby plume!" and make fun of each other's plumes. And we always have to duck coming out of the bus so we don't wreak them.

Our DM(s) give high fives to everyone while we line up.

We do: Feet? Together! Knees? Flexed! Butt? Tucked! Chest? Out! Shoulders? Back! Head? Up! Mouth? Shut! Eyes? With Pride! Eyes? With Pride!! EYES? WITH PRIDE! Go? Home! After a football game a different senior leads that chant.
We have this hand shake where we hook our pinkie then our middle finger.
During warm-up before half time we do high steps. 16 counts. About 4 or 5 times. Each time we get faster and faster.
There is this electrical pole that we march by and who ever is closest too it knock on it.
Um... not really sure if this counts but if our football team wins the game we put our hats backward.

A few years before my freshman year, if not more, there were steady traditions going on in the band for pre-comp and such.
They handed out lemon heads or lemon drops before each competition. There were also a bunch of other traditions...but I wasn't involved in them. We hardly do handshakes anymore.
It feels like the past means nothing, and traditions are gone.
Sigh.

After we finish rehearsal every time the dm will call us to attention. Our band director then says, "the word of the day is...." and he will say a word that usually has something to do with an event going on that week though sometimes its silly. Then the band says whatever the word is followed by sir! For example if the word is perserverance we reply, "Perserverance sir!!!" then the band director says band dismissed. But if someone moves then we start over.
