I guess it makes more sense to have a color guard captain rather than section leader. I don't know how they do that at my school; I don't pay THAT much attention to guard. I think we just have a drumline sl. We have a small drumline because we only have like seven drums... But our pit is huge - I have no clue how that leadership goes. We don't really have groups in our band really, but the marchers, non marchers (pit), and colorguard tend to separate... but we rehearse separately for the first half of the season.

SL is the leader of each individual section...clarinets, flutes, sax, trumpets...etc. A captain is in charge of the group...woodwinds, brass, guard, percussion. Understand? Oh and for someof you on here, dont let others keep you from moving or trying out. Dont let them make you not try out. If you want to do it, do it. Who cares. If you have heart thats all that matters.

Our band is so tiny we can't have people be section leaders since they're the only instrument/instrument type haha... so we just have our 3 grouped "sections." But our "SLs" don't do anything! The only reason they were elected is because our BD thought they were seniors, even though half of them are juniors. Thank goodness he's changing his selection strategy this year. ;)However, no matter what status (dm, sl, whatever!) the true leaders will always shine. Those are the people that will step up and take things over when the job's not getting done. Those are the people that will lead your band to success and sadly some of them go unrecognised...

We have sl's for claris, flutes (2sls), saxes (alto, tenor, bari), high brass (trumpets and mellos), and low brass (tuba and bones). IDK about percussion and guard. We have a small band (ab.100). And yeah, try out, even if you don't think you'll make it. Sometimes your bd will surprise you.

You think about 100 is small?!?! My band is barely 45! and that is w/ all guard and drumline! This is our first year w/ guard and our band was smaller last year so it was around... 30ish?

Amen to that, jazztastic. I know exactly how you feel. People on here are talking about a few hundred when I am lucky to have 50. I know how you feel.

Sweet, then you and I are in the same boat And what especially sucks is being surrounded by all the bands with 100-300 people and being in the same region as them, having to compete! Small bands rule though, don't you think? It's like a large, dysfunctional, extrememly hormonal family. yay! ;D I wouldn't trade them for being in the best band in the state w/ 250 people.

The guy I take lessons from has a band of like 30 (not sure if it includes pit and guard). Well, I think we had 89, or something like that. I know its not *small* but it is nowhere near big - especially for our school size. We have like 1,600 people or something like that. There is a nearby school about the same size as ours and their band has like 250 people. We are a 4A band (approaching open class! yay!) and they are a 6O, so we are kind of like friends, not rivals. We had a visiting college band at one of our comps, and they were huge!!! (I understand college marching is much different than HS). They had a dancing sousaphone line of 12!!! we only have one lone tuba who refuses to play the schools old white sousaphone (Which I think bears the resemblance of a toilet). jazztastic, we don't compete with larger bands, we have a class, which we are given a number based on size, and then A class or Open class, which pretty much means how good you are. If we get first at champs this year, we might be able to go up to open! We got second to a band from virginia this year, which sucked. We think that technically we should have gotten first because it was the *northern states championships* and I do NOT consider virginia a northern state.

Whoops my bad, by compete I meant for concert and wgi stuff! It sucks when you go to regionals against all the kids with huge, prestigious band programmes and private instructors and crap while our school is well... underdeveloped and poor. I don't mind though. Like our principal said, we're the "hometown heroes." And my school has about 1500 but we have a 45 member band? A town 20 min down the road has 2000+ student body but some ridiculous large amount of people in their marching band... they're amazing, but jerks nontheless! I H-A-T-E those cocky bands.. geez.
We have divisions, IV, III, II, I, with one being the largest. We're 4 but we'll be 3 this coming season because our director wants to push us ahead and challenge us. Then, they classify you by 3A, 4A, the size of your school and all that stuff...

Yeah our school doesn't have an amazing program ... yet. Our band recently underwent a complete staff turnover (the poor seniors this year have gone through 5 bds, countless staff members, and the construction of a new band room). I, being a freshman, completely avoided all of this, and I can tell that the band is going to go a long way with our new bd.
To go back to the original topic, though, I made sl!!! I am so happy!

Congrats! You seem very passionate about what you do and your section, I think you'll do an excellent job My DM audition has been moved to Thursday! I get to conduct the opener of the show (Magical Mystery Tour/Hard Day's Night) and then Friday is the interview.

Thanks, I tried out for dm, too, and my bd said that I outconducted everybody, but my interview was lacking - mainly because I am a freshman. And he said he couldn't wait for next year (neither can I!!!).
clarinetlover - you have a complicated leadership system - its kind of like altos'. I don't really get the squad thing though...

How'd it go? I was the only one trying out too but it went really well. You play bass clarinet? Welcome to the strange low clarinet club. Well bass isn't that strange - but its close enough
